Hi All

Just a quick question.
I have been reading most of the post I can on the change between a 350 and a 700r4. looking at this as my 350 78 elk is a little slow off the line (read gutless) , I have just go it on the road and with new mild cam - eldebrock manifold and running straight propane. I think the problem is the 2.41 rear end so I have ordered a 3.42 to be installed in a couple of weeks.

Because I am in Australia I am looking at a local th700 ( currently sits behind a 5L VN commodore..) with cable kick down (no computer), i understand I will have to mod my cross member and shorten my tail shaft but will I have to change the gear selection lever, one post Ii read said the th 700 has 1 2 3 d where as my 78 column shift elco is D L1 L2??

Anybody completed this conversion with a column shift with some advice.

Many thanks
Oz Camino

Yes a 700R4 is a 4 speed 1,2,3,4 and if you install a lock out for 4th gear it will drop another 3 hundred RPM in 4th gera lockup. I have done this change several times in 69 ELky's. My present one was a Th400 to 3.73 Posi and I changed when I pre-powered. The 400TH & 3.73 I was turning 3450 at 64 MPH now I turning 2350 + or - at 64MPH in 4th gear with lockup. This is a none computer 1989 700R4 31 spline. You don't want the older 700R with 26 spline I believe, if you have any HP at all. If you are a column shift you will probably have to remake your linkage or go to BOWTIE Transmissions and buy there linkage for a stock column shift if your are a floor or console no problem get the shifter box you want. Also if you go the 700 route w/lockup put a switch on the lockup so you turn it on and off so it will not go into lockup at to low of RPM, I have had to do this as Big Blocks do not like to boog at 15 hundred Rpm in traffic. Find some one that knows 700R4 and get one set up for street/strip.
