http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/711.cfm

I found this interesting article on a web site called "second chance garage". Although they did not directly take on the zinc additive issue, they did make some interesting points.

Does anyone have any scientific evidence to support the zinc addive issue? I would truly like to know as I do try to care for my engine as best I can, and if there is a way to improve lifespan and durability please let us all in on the info!

Good article. It's really hard to find anyone saying anything about automotive lubricants these days. Ask a straight question to the manufacturers and they give you marketing hype.

I am currently running castrol 5w-30 but I am thinking next oil change I am going to put in valvoline racing oil just because. I don't remember if my employee discount at autozone works on oil...

I used to run 20/50 and straight 50 for awhile but it didn't do much for me. It could be somewhat helpful in high temperature use like running around on a 110 plus day in traffic or racing applications (which it's meant for anyway) but could be problematic when it gets colder outside.

I ran 10/40 for awhile too but that weight is getting harder to find and wasn't doing much for me either.

I thought I read somewhere that you should use the lightest oil you can that still offers the necessary protection to help with gas mileage.

I'm using 10/30 now and other than a bit more lifter noise it's doing fine.

Deisel oil still has the proper additives like Zinc. If youre concerned about cams and such buy Rotella T or Delo 400, or any deisel specific oil. It comes in 15W40 or staright 30 and will do fine in a regular car engine. I have used both weights in cars with good results. Most of my cars use OHC so I use Mobil 1 15W50 for them.

This is a link to a web post that has more information about the oil problem that you probably want to know.

All about Oil

This is a Porsche 911 technical forum and there is a lot of real science and testing discussed. It will take you several hours to read through it all. After reading all of this quit using Valoline and switched to Swepco oil in all my cars.
