pm Post subject: A New Question About Carbs:
Well, I have a CCC carb on my '82 elk. The engine (305) and the carb are both from an '87 Firebird.
My elk originally had the smallest V6 you could get for that model year (I forget the exact size...) And I found the old wiring it had for the original carb, though it's been butchered a bit, it's nothing I couldn't fix. Though I have no idea if the ECM even works still...
So, my question is this: Will the original ECM be able to control the new carb? If so, would it be better than replacing the carb with a mechanical? And if both of those are a yes, how can I tell if my ECM still works?

On both my '85 and '87 Elkies the Mixture Control Solenoids on the carburetors will make a ticking sound for a about 30 seconds when the ignition key is turned to run position.
I believe that would be an indication of a working ECM. Does your check engine light work? If you don't have the ECM controlling the carb it is running too rich. I would think you need the ECM and harness from an '86 or '87 Elky that had a V8. And I like the computer controlled E4ME carb over the others. Getting a non-computer controlled carb and not using the ECM means you will also need to get a vacuum advance distributor.

I already have a vacuum advance distributor I don't have the computer for that either....
There aren't any places for me to go pulling computers out of Elks... the only two around here have no engine left to know what they had... There is a Cheyenne that has the same engine and Carb as I do, I've pulled a number of parts off of it... But, there are alot of problems with that option...
But aren't all Rochester Quadrajets fairly generic? Shouldn't the computer from one be just as good as from another?
For that matter, I don't really even know if the computer components in my carb are still functional...
As for my check engine light, it works in that it lights up.... all the time The bulb was pulled out when I bought it, I went to replace it to find it never turns off... one of the quirks of having a non-stock engine
Eh, I'd rather avoid putting any computers into my Elk anyways... I love them on my desk, but I don't want 'em anywhere near my cars... I have enough of them in my Toronado to make a small aircraft.
I just thought maybe I could save a bit of money and time with a quick, easy fix, so I thought I'd ask... If it's more complicated than replacing the wire-harnesses, then I'm just going to go mechanical as soon as I can snag one.
