Hey, I'm going to buy a 76 el camino tomorrow, but I can't find the vin on it. I would like to find it before I buy it, but it's at a good price so as long as he has the title for it I will buy it. It would be nice to be able to verify the vin still. I'm wondering if there are other spots on the car where the vin is written. The tag in the door jamb has been painted over also, so I can't get any info of of it. Anyone have any suggestions?

If nothing else, does anyone know a good way to get the paint off of the door tag so I can pull the vin from there? I don't want to destroy the plastic or anything by using sand paper on it and I'm scared it will melt the plastic if I use paint thinner or anything else similar.

Step back for a moment.

Why is there no VIN plate on the car? By law is has to be there and removing it can be illegal as well as putting another one on it.

No wonder its a good deal as most people would not touch it with a 10 ft pole.
You are asking for problems and going to have to jump a lot of hoops to get it licensed provided its a legit car and not something hot. ONLY THE STATE CAN ISSUE A NEW VIN and no matter what hidden VIN you can find, the state will issue its own VIN and you will forever have an oddball car that will likely have less value when trying to sell.

There are hidden vin derivatives but only the cops are supposed to know where to find them. I don't know on a 1976 where they are but the engine, trans, body and frame have them.

TITLE 18. CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART I. CRIMES
CHAPTER 113. STOLEN PROPERTY

18 USCS § 2321 (2003)

§ 2321. Trafficking in certain motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts

(a) Whoever buys, receives, possesses, or obtains control of, with intent to sell or otherwise dispose of, a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part, knowing that an identification number for such motor vehicle or part has been removed, obliterated, tampered with, or altered, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.

107 A.L.R.5th 567

SUMMARY: Illegally removing or altering a vehicle identification number (VIN) or selling or possessing a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN constitutes a crime in most states. In order to impose liability, state courts normally require a culpable mental state on the part of the defendant in altering or removing a VIN or in possessing a vehicle or vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN. Some states, however, do not require any culpable mental state on the part of the defendant when selling a vehicle or vehicle part with a removed or altered VIN.
