While there are no dues or fees for membership at El Camino
Central, we do rely upon member contributions to keep the site and server running smoothly. As membership grows, so does
site usage. Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely
slow page loading. Many of you may have also noticed the new member rankings used to recognize supporting members.

Hey everyone, I just posted this post in our Region 6 section. Short version: Request for contributions to be used towards the purchase of a new server (or servers) so that we can the site to operate at optimum levels.
I will be the first to tell you about the state of our economy as it relates to rising fuel costs, insurances, adjustable mortgages, and property taxes. If you could great. If you can't, that is fine too. Just keep in mind that every little bit will help.....
Note to Rober Moore please correct me if I've mis-stated anything. Thanks.
Here is the Region 6 message
Several folks have commented on how this site has been loading a bit slower and working relaitvely spotty.
El Dawgg sent site administrator Mr. Robert Moore a message. As some of us suspected and he has mentioned in the main page, this site is running at these levels due to the amount of users and traffic as they relate and compare to the older servers that are obviously slower.
A new server / servers will cost around $2,000.00. I for one, enjoy this website so much that it is my home page. It's time for us in Region 6 and the rest of the site to kick in a little of whatever we can so that we can keep the site running up to speed (no pun intended).
I just pay paled Mr. Moore with my contribution and a big thanks for running this site. Thanks to all that have already contributed and thanks in advance to those that will contribute whatever is possible.
My hope is that we can help Mr. Moore out with this endeavor so that we can all be up and running like it was not long ago. Thanks again everyone! _________________ Dropped Fullsize

I also just made a paypal contribution to the site. Let's get the ball rolling and raise enough money to help Robert keep this great site up and running. _________________ Ernie

Sent my donation in through Pay Pal after seeing 82Elco`s Region 6(Fl.) forum calling for contributions for the upgrade.Hope others will also join in.Juan ,you guys and ladies are right. It`s time for us to help this site again.Best bang for the buck there is. _________________ A good friend will come and bail you out of jail.A true friend is sitting next to you saying " Damn, wasn`t that fun" !
Just an update for everyone concerning the funding of the new server. So far we have received $1065 in donations! We still need twice this to meet our goal. I have a friend at Dell computers who is getting us a remarkable deal on the new box. I want to personally thank everyone who has contributed thus far and encourage others to donate towards this much needed upgrade. The membership donations alone have never been enough to run the site and I usually end up a couple of hundred a month out of my own pocket to keep it up. This site has the finest group of members of any automotive group I have ever seen anywhere hands down. What started out as a little spot on the web has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years and has grown beyond our wildest dreams and has out grown or current server. Our wish is to keep this site free and never charge annual membership fees as other site do. So please, if you have found this site helpful in your El Camino and automotive endeavors, help keep it alive!
Robert, why not charge some annual dues for some added abilities? I really don't think anyone would protest over paying say $20 a year for the ability to post pictures, upload attachments, have a profile with a picture, have a custom avatar, have signature images, and have a user rank with a custom title on the message board as well as increased private message space and increased signature space. These are just a few of the things that my Lincoln club gives to members, along with 20 megs of storage, who pay $20 a year to join. THose who don't still have access to the forums, just in a slighly restricted way.
If you use vBulletin it automatically keeps track of these members, and these minimal fees will help maintain the server. _________________ Leo

I would have no objection to dues for the add-ons. Makes sense.
If I had access to a copy of the database conversion script to VB, then I could see if is even possible to transfer our database over to VB. I would hate to buy a license to the program only to find we cannot transfer or would lose information. I like VB but my only concern is can we really do it without a programatic nightmare. _________________ El Camino Central Founder/AdministratorAuto A/C & Electrical Shop Owner, ASE Master

I personally like the idea of yearly dues. It will certainly cause some of these "members" with 3 + years of membership, and 3000 posts who have never contributed a dime, to ante up. . .I'm up for this!
