That is timely advice as I need to refresh the cooling system on my El Camino very soon. It was in storage for >10 years and in the past year I have only been starting it to move it around or short runs to get work done, so the radiator fluid is not looking too flash at all (rusty water). _________________ John (from Down Under)

I replaced the radiator on that low-milage '87 I recently bought because it had so much solder bloom in it. Would not clean up even with double the amount of flush. I believe it set for several years without a coolant change.

Actually Jon, the engine was not overheating, I just was not going to put fresh antifreeze in that radiator. I think any chemical strong enough to dissolve that solder bloom would be detrimental on the heater core and water pump. So I just changed the radiator. NAPA quoted $150. Only cost $103. after I told them Auto Zone had the very same radiator for $106.

Yeah, Prestone makes a kit that splices into one of your heater hoses. You just hook up a water hose to it and it flushes your radiator and engine for you. It's like six bucks and to be honest, it's kinda interesting to see the crap that comes out of your engine.

I think thats what I' doing! Especially since the local oil change place charges almost $60.00 for a rad flush. _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc

Just a little word of advice after you flush your radiator, change the thermostat. On two occasions after I flushed the radiators on newly aquired work cars('82 Chevy and '91 Caddillac) they had an overheating problem. All the built up junk in the engine clogged the thermostst. It's a little insurance for a PIA problem.

Yep, I work at one of those places. It's absolutely criminal to charge that kind of money for a service that a machine does, but whatever. I need money to pay for my car. And you're right, it is $60 at Jiffy Lube.
Shoot! I guess I have to postpone it. I just started 7/10's for 5 weeks! _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc
hey Jon, didn't you say you were out of a job? Looks like you will be making up for lost time (and Wages).
