In 1971 the SS not a model, it was an option package. Its not coded in the VIN (or anywhere else on vehicle), you will need some original documentation to determine what options came on the Elky. Adding SS equipment is very common so its often hard to tell a real one from a wannabe, unless you find an original untampered with vehicle. 1971 the SS option was available with any optionial V8 engine, 350, 402 or 454. The 307 was a base engine in the V8 model 13480 and 13680 and not optional.
Another thing, the SS option could only be added to the 13680 Custom model (1st 5 characters in VIN are model series), so if you have 13580, 13380 or 13480 it could never have been a SS optioned El Camino. Note-3rd digits denotes base engine, 3 or 5 is a 6 cyl and 4 & 6 are V8 models. Optional engines were not coded in the VIN until 1972 model year. _________________ Mike

In addition, if the VIN began with 133 or 135 it'd indicate a 6-cyl engine. Remember the first 5 characters of the VIN has a different meaning than the style number used by Fisher Body. The style on the trim tag does not indicate a V8 or 6-cyl engine. I have quite a few examples of trim tags with something like 13411, 13617, etc. on the trim tag only to have 13311, 13517, etc. on the VIN plate. See http://www.chevellestuff.com
An added note, the 1, 3, 5, (and 7 in earlier years) or 2, 4, 6, 8 notes the particular series in the VIN, i.e., 1/2 was Nomad wagon, 3/4 was Chevelle & El Camino Standard or Greenbrier, 5/6 Malibu, and 8 Concours Estate or Monte Carlo - note no 137xx series Chevelle built after 1968. _________________ NECOA #041 - ACES #1709

That sucks you can't tell. Mine has disc brakes, A/c, tach/clock dash, and a cruise control unit (stock??) It is in the paint shop now, i should of bought an SS hood for it, but our chevelle's SS re-pop hood has a bow to it. My Vin # is 136801L132335 (should i not post the vin?) _________________ 71 Elky- In the paint booth right now!
Look in the glove box for the tire pressure label and the tire size is on there. SS option included F60X15 tires, not available on other then SS optioned cars/El Camino. Of course thats assuming someone was not clever enough to change that.
If it says 14 in, not a SS optioned vehcile _________________ Mike

Here is a 72 SS 350 I bought new off the lot back in March 1972...The flame graphic was a dealer installed Chevy accessory. They had put this on the elky and it was to be the sales managers demo till I walked in and wanted an SS El Camino. He was off that week and they sold his demo before he even got to see it. When I was back in a few months later with warranty (leaking air shocks) he made a point of talking wit me when he spotted the vehicle in the service dept.
