pm Post subject: Removing A/C unit
I have a quick question for anyone out there listening. I'm getting ready to install a new motor. I have factory A/C unit but want to remove entire unit from firewall. Do I need to get a cover fabricated to cover up the space of the existing A/C unit on the firewall or does anyone make a cover that installs on the firewall for this situation?

Hey 71,
Welcome to the forum and I like the screen name!
There's a section for A/C and Heating that I searched and though the topic's been brought up before I wasn't able to find a firm answer to your question.

If you just remove the engine compartment side of your A/C heat unit you will render the whole unit unusable. The air flows thru that part before the heater core and then on to the ducts. If you don't care IE drag car then I would remove the heater core and box also. You could then fab a cover for the existing firewall holes. Your other option is to find a car with out air and transfer those components to your car so you would have heat/defrost capability.

As Adrain Stated above, ACDELETE.com will have what you need. You will have to get the delete box as well as their blower for it, then you will retain your heating abilities. Their blower is smaller and yours will not work or should I say adapt. I've installed three of their units in customer's cars, and they worked out quite well. The Customers were also very pleased as it also saved them on Labor costs in the removal of the under dash components. I also thimk the price is very fair for the delete unit. _________________ Keep the Shiney Side Up

Larry,
On ACDELETE.com, they say in the installation instructions that you can use the existing blower motor and blower fan. I'm just wondering why you say I need to buy the whole kit from them?

This is a "Do it yourself" tip.
I just pulled the A/C unit out of my 73 elkySS. I went to the local wrecking yard and purchased a complete heater unit from a 74.
This comes is two parts. the inner and the outer box. I got the controls and cut out the right side of the firewall, from the heater core tube openings all the way to the right side. Adapted the firewall part into mine by cutting out the rectangular hole and making room for the different placement of the heater box. Drilled a couple of holes to match the different mounting bolts. Pulled out all of the A/C control's and installed the Heater control's. Firewall 'Patch Panel" is held in place with sheet metal screws and it is all sealed up with the proper sealing caulk. A little black paint and it looks "Almost" as good as new" The whole package from the wrecking yard cost me $40.00, and it took me most of the day, including the trip to the wrecking yard. _________________ "73 El Camino. I just received my new AC Delete Cover from the website you guys suggested. They seem pretty busy so it took a little while longer. I'm also glad I ordered when I did because they went up $20 on June 1 and shipping went up $2. They cut me a deal and only charged shipping once since I ordered two boxes. One for me and one for my uncle's 1970 Chevelle. Haven't installed it yet but it looks pretty nice in the box. My only suggestion is to be prepared to do a little drilling as the holes on the fiberglass aren't pre drilled. I'll try to get some pics up once the box is on. Thanks.
