well i got to ask,on a 84,exactly where does the wire for the temp.guage exit a harness?i belive i got it and the guage is not reacting to the wire being grounded.my engine has been swaped to a 350 and the e.c.m. is out of there. i removed all the emissions crap and the wiering from it . there was wires to the sending switch on the goose neck but i dont think that was it.i have looked at the wireing diag. and believe it is green. any help is needed. thank you carl

If you are talking about the temp sensor located below the left exhaust manifold, between spark plugs #1 and #3, then yes the wire is dark green. I just looked at the wire on my '87 and it comes from underneath. But as I recall the wire on my '85 came from the top of the engine near the front. I can't check the '85 right now because my daughter is displaying it with a for sale sign 90 miles from me.

I'm assuming you dash has gauges, do the rest of them work? If not the flat-plastic printed wire harness is probably not making good contact with the inner firewall connection. It's not a real plug, just contacts under a little pressure from the dash pod.

Doug

dougs85,thanks for the reply. im pretty sure i have the right wire and i do need to check the dash pod connections one day. its all loose because the prev. owner had no patience and would break things apart instead of un screwing them.the dash pod mounts are mostly broken off.if you or anyone else can let me know where the wire exits the wireing harness.thanks carl

Well if you have the green wire, it's most likely the temp sensor/switch wire. But your temp gauge will not work if the gauge pod printed circuit contacts are not making a good connection with the contacts on the inner firewall.

Ditto what Doug said. I had some wierd gage issues and finally tracked it down to the connector that plugs into the back of the instrument cluster. I used contact cleaner (from Radio Shack) and rubbed <gently> with scotchbrite pad to clean both the printed circuit tabs and the connector. It's been fine now for a few years.
