I went to the VIN breakdown site and it says on a 1970 year model the number 36 stands for a Malibu, Custom El Camino 8 Cyl.
What is a Malibu Custom El Camino?? I thought all 1970 El Caminos were known as a Chevelle style El Camino.

Thanks,
Pete

It should read; Malibu, OR Custom El Camino 8 Cyl.

Chevelle is the SERIES, the Chevelle is the 3000 series, 3136,3680 etc.
Malibu, El Camino, Concours is the MODEL in the series.

THANK YOU SO MUCH MIKE! You have been so helpful! Please forgive me for asking such a dumb question. I'm 72 years old and I don't know very much about the El Camino, but I'm learning.
I just bought the car last March from a classic car dealership in AZ. It's really a nice looking car and I get compliments on it every day.
The only problem is I think it's a "Heinze 57" if you know what I mean.
It looks just like a 1970 SS but it's a clone. I really think it's a 1971 year model that someone put a 70 front on and changed the VIN. They also removed the body ID tag.
It had a 71 owners manuel in the glove box and other things like the headlight switch and radio switch knobs are from a 71 year model.
I don't know if the 350 engine is original to the car or not. I can't see the numbers on the engine.
Anyway I love the car... or truck....it seems more like a car..drives like a car. I wanted a classic car and also needed a truck to haul my Cushman motorscooter with.
Thanks again for your help.....Pete in Corpus Christi, Texas Smile
