Try looking up beside the left side of the ash tray. That's where it was on my 84.

Thanks for the link, Old and Wise One. I do have an 81, and I'm working on swapping in a turbo Buick V6 from an 87 GN. Currently I'm pulling the dash out and so far have not located the connector, hence the question. I will need to interface the ALDL port with the GN ecm.
