Hey guys,

I have a 305 with HEI and a quadrajet. I'm getting a lot of spark knock when the engine is warm with middle grade gas. It still knocks a little with premium when warm. I'd like to use regular with these insane gas prices but alas, I don't really know how to change the timing. I have a light and I think my mechanic set it to 13 degrees this winter. This car has no knock sensor or computer, it's 100% mechanical (other than the HEI.)

Does anyone have a simple explaination of how to change the timing and what I should possibly change it to?

Thanks

Loosen the Distributor hold down bolt, With the engine running, at Idle, turn the Distributor slowly, and set the timming mark to aprox. 8 degrees BTDC. 13 is way too much. Start there at 8, then snug down the Dist. bolt, test drive. You may have to tweek it a bit one way or the other. But 8 is a real good starting point, and may just prove to be fine.

Unhook the vacuum advance when you do this. Also, if you dont have one, get a good timing light.

I didn't mention the vaccume line as his post states Mech. Dist. and he said he has a light. But those ARE two very important steps otherwise.
