Hey guys. I haven't been around here much lately. I've been going through a divorce for about the last 8 months and it's finally done. Yay. They tried to take my Elky from me As it was, it was literally being held hostage at my ex's parents house for the last 2 years. I bought it in April of 06 and moved out of there in September of 06. A few weeks before I moved out I had asked them to fix the car that was blocking it in or to let me put it in neutral and push it out of the way because at this time, my Elky still ran perfectly fine. They wouldn't let me move the other car saying it would be "fixed next week."
Well, that was almost 2 years ago and I just now got my Mino back yesterday.
When I had left there I had asked them to go out like once a week and just start her and let her run for a few minutes. They never did it. She hasn't been started now in like...over 2 years now. (And not driven because as some of you may remember my oil pressure hose thing shooting black oil all over the interior story.)
So anyways. Good ol' Goldie was "contested property" in my divorce thanks to Arizona and it's community property laws. The idiot I was married to for 2 years only worked 2 days the whole time we were married. I paid for the car with MY hard earned cash from working 3 jobs. It wasn't in any way his, but the court had said that if I was to keep it, I would have to give him $600. ("His half" back of the money I paid for it. 'Cause in AZ they assume that everything you buy in a marriage is half ones money and half anothers...what the heck.)
After finally being able to talk to my ex, who it turns out he didn't want the car to begin with, his parents were just trying to take me for everything I had 'cause they're seriously mentally ill just like their son...finally we came to an agreement that I could keep my own darn car. So of course I called them to talk about coming over to get it and his parents went nuts and threatned me and said they'd be waiting on their porch with a gun and blah blah blah. So yesterday I had to call the cops, and they sent out the RUDEST OFFICER EVER to do a civil standby so I could get my freakin' car.
Here's the part of the story that is just so damn sad.
I pulled up infront of the house and the officer is already there making them move the other cars that were blocking it in (keep in mind, the truck that was going to be fixed "next week" 2 years ago still didn't run.) and the officer comes to the car and I show him the court order and everything, and this is what he says "I don't know why you even want this car. It looks like it's rotting and falling apart."
WHAT THE HELL. I was so offended. That's MY Mino. What right does he have to say anything like that to me? My friend what was with me wanted to clock him right in the face. There's cars worse than her driving on the road right now!!!!
So we were finally able to get my car on my friends trailor and bring it to my house. She is not in good shape They never started her like I asked, part of her trim is bent and the kicker is that the hood doesn't close. They said they broke it when they were "working on it". They don't know squat diddily about cars, so what the heck were they doing "working on" a car that wasn't even theirs! They took her car cover off for some odd reason so now her paint is even more faded than it was before.
Here are a few pictures of my poor little baby. I have no idea what it's going to take to get her running now.
Here are some pics...
Broken hood. This is as closed as it gets. It took 3 big guys to get it to close this much.
Atleast the interior still looks okay. They took my car cover off of it though so it's a lot more faded.
Notice the oil spot on the floor from the above mentioned incident. There's a lot more too
I have no idea how long it's going to take me to get her driveable again. I'm so sad
BUT the good news is that I'm single and that I have my Mino back!!!!!!
Man... I was waiting for that story to be over. lol it kept getting worse and worse. I am sorry you had to go through all of that.
I told my current girlfriend we can get engaged and just stay that way till? Its the thought that counts right? I have never understood the divide into half rule and accustomed to lifestyle BS.
All I am saying is that if I get X amount in my trust fund, why does anyone else deserve half of X because they have been with me for so long? Hell... that means some of my close friends deserve part of it if we stop hanging out. lol _________________ 1996 Ford Thunderbird Pearl White - NO MORE

Here's a tip for anyone in AZ getting married with cool stuff. Make sure it stays in your name alone after the marriage. If things go wrong which statistics say it does for 50% of couples, remember two words.
Sole property, also Sole and Separate Property. I had it in my divorce decree and had zero issues since I had proof of ownership before the marriage. Community property does not apply to property owned before the marriage.
As for the cop, no big surprise there. I often think Phoenix cops are more interested in speeding tickets than enforcing any real laws. I had two cars broken in to in Phoenix and both times in I was met with two of the dumbest cops I've ever dealt with. Blank stares and horrible procedure. They would have accomplished more by standing there picking their noses.
Mesa thinks they can do whatever they want regardless of the law and will tell you so too. Tempe and most of the MAricopa county deputies have a "supercop" complex and on and on.
I appreciate what a cop has to go through but I have a problem with the power trips they get on. They aren't always the best and the brightest, sorry but that's the way it is. Hey, It may be a thankless job but if you hate it so much, quit and let someone in there who actually gives a darn.
That cop that was supposed to be there to help enforce the order should have just kept his mouth shut. Instead he opened it and let his brains fall out.
At least your ordeal is over. You're done with these nutjobs and can get on with your life now.

I am really pleased for you Sara. Glad you have shaken that "monkey" off your back and also got your El Camino back in your good hands. It is obvious from what you have said you really value your El Camino.
Good luck with it. _________________ John (from Down Under)

Thanks guys.
Yeah unfortunatnly (Hey sorry I can't spell haha) I bought my Mino 3 months after we got married. It was just a generally tough situation because he was mentally ill and didn't work and everything like that. I bought everything and paid the mortgage for 2 years. I'm just glad I got out okay...and I'll be getting $300 a month for a year to help pay off credit cards. I guess community property is good when it comes to debt....haha.
But yeah. It may not look like it because I don't know squat about cars really, but my elky means a lot to me. I seriously hugged it yesterday. I missed it so much. I just think that she looks so sad. I like to think that she missed me and is now happy to be home where she can get the love that she needs
I'm a dork haha sorry.
I'm glad to be back on the community 'cause a lot of you AZ people were a lot of help before. And looking at her now you can see that she's in need of a lot of help again. Anyone up for a road trip to Prescott? Hehe.
"I don't know why you even want this car. It looks like it's rotting and falling apart."
How rude! That's like saying "you got an ugly baby lady!" Some just can't see past the bad paint and sprung hinges what a vehicle can be.
Glad your back. Hope the best luck on your restoration.

Glad yoyugot your Elky back Sara! Now with the free loader off your back you can move on with your life! Sounds like you are a go getter to start with and that will take you a long ways!
How about it some of you AZ Members! Any of you able to give this young lady a hand with her Elky? _________________ "Still Just Truck'in"

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Sara, hopefully things will start to look up now that the worst has passed and the mino is back in your custody. She's a little rough but she still looks solid, I don't think it will take too much to pick her back up. Let us know if we can help in any way...even us non-AZ members.
Have you inspected the hood hinges or the inside of the fender where they mount? Maybe something is just bent or tweaked a little out of place.
unfortunately prescott is too far for me to drive for now, what with no money coming in. perhaps one day though...... _________________ 64 falcon

And the exterior trim shown in the photos appears to be in decent shape...which pieces are bent?
Yeah...I looked in there and there's two pieces of metal in the hinge part that are hitting and you can tell they never used to be. When I get back from vacation (Motor City...WOOt) I'll take some pics of it. I was scared to open it again 'cause I don't have 3 guys handy to help me close it again It also looks like there was a bolt in this hole on this piece of metal that is no longer there. That was just from what I could see from the outside, like I said, I didn't want to open it and not get it closed especially since I'm going to be gone for a week.
I did have a friend do a once over under the hood for me, just to make sure everything is still there, since they were "working on" it and all. They stole a battery terminal and there were some random bolts laying ontop of the radiator but other than that everything looked okay.
It's the big piece of metal trim on the drivers side door. It's all bent back. I'm thinking it would be easier to pop it off and bend it back and then put it back on. It's kinda a safety hazzard at the moment 'cause it's sharp and it sticks out a few inches.

I too am sorry to hear about your troubles...
I've never had to go though anything like that, but I will say, I just got my Camino back Saturday after a few months, and it was a GREAT feeling to have her home. If you weren't several states away I'd give you a hand with that Camino, but good luck either way. BTW, I'm jealous. It looks like you have power windows/locks. I've got all the parts, but haven't had the time to install...
Also, it appears your hood is still in good shape. Count your blessings. Quite often hoods get buckled from people who don't know how to close them (rocking slightly). Dad's old '76 looked just like that. All it needed was a new (good shape used) hinge. I would guess yours is the same...
Congrats on you and your Camino's freedom... _________________

Sara, if you have a list of parts you need send it to me. I'll check and see if I have anything. Maybe a road trip to Prescott would be nice to get out of the heat.

Agree completely on the hood thing - looks to be just the hinge. But, be careful with the hood until you get it fixed, or it may end-up bent like the one from my car.

Hi Sara,
I was wondering what had happened with you. Perhaps you'll remember me cause I sent you a little help when you had the oil gyser thing goin' on.
Raise your hood again when you are ready to either fix or replace the hinge. Do your best to keep those three bruisers from pushing it back down. Even when the hinges are not bent you can damage the hood just trying to line it up.
I'll watch my favorite junk yard (it sounds like Toms84SS is also) for a 4th gen hood hinge.
If you didn't remove that oil pressure line and change the sender you'll probably get another oily shower if you fire it up. Seems like I remember you said your husband er-a -sorry...your X only plugged it off last time.
Anyway...the hinge is not the end of the world, they aren't that hard to change out, Heck, take the hood off, fix the o pressure line, get a new battery terniminal and burn up a little road!
