pm Post subject: Factory Muncie in a 79 elcamino?
Any of you guys know if GM put a muncie 4 speed in the 79 el camino's? I know they came with the signsaw 4 speed but wasnt sure about the muncie?
Reason why I ask is that there is a guy here that is trying to convert from a "muncie 4 speed" , so he says, to a automatic. He wants to trade straight up, all of my automatic stuff for his manual stuff. Although he said that the trans is hard going into gears, But if it's a muncie I will have it rebuilt. He is about an hour and a half away, so checking for the muncie stamp isn't fesiable without a drive. He swears up and down it's a muncie. I am like a 5 year old when it comes to operation and mechanics or identification of manual trannys. I know how to bang the gears and would love to swap to a manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also what all do I need to get from him to convert my car to a manual?
The things that I know of are,
Trans and bellhousing
trans crossmember
flywheel and pressure plate
linkage and shifter
clutch fork
brake and clutch pedal assembly
driveshaft
manual steering coluom
Am I missing anything? Thanks for your help here. _________________ I can't complain, Even if i did no one would listen!

If it has a Muncie, it's a transplant, Nick. I put a Muncie in a fifth gen I had so I know it's possible. Mine was a manual trans car so the swap was not so involved. Your list sounds ok. You will need to cut a hole in the tunnel for the shifter and come up with some type of "hump". _________________ Jim

That's what I thought. They stopped putting muncies into factory cars in the late 60's early 70's right?
Even if its not a muncie I still might do the trade just to get all the misc parts for manual conversion. Will the signasaws bellhousing bolt up with the muncie? Is there anything elese that Needs to be changed when switching from the signasaw to the muncie? linkage, crossmember or the like? Or will everything work?
The hump should be the easy part. I got a welder and the nessicery tools for the job. Feels good finally having tools and being able to get crap done!
I still don't understand why he wants a automatic????????? Drag racing maybe? I didn't ask... It's not my problem.
Thank for your help I figured atleast I can be as knowledgable as possible with your guys help, Thanks again _________________ I can't complain, Even if i did no one would listen!

Not sure when they stopped using them. Bellhousings fit all manual trans that they used. There are however two sizes of bellhousing, depending on clutch size. The rest of the parts should all work. Get him to send a pic of the trans and post it. BTW the other trans factory is "Saginaw" _________________ Jim

OK, I have the stuff it just isn't in the car but yes the Muncie will bolt to the bellhousing, as will a BW Super T-10 which is what I'm using, the bolt patterns were the same. But the Muncies and the BW T-10's have the plate for mounting the shifter farther back than the Sag does, you either need bucket seats, modify a bench/split seat or possibly modify the shifter. The bellhousings available either use an 11" clutch with a 168tooth flywheel or a 10 1/2" clutch with a 153 tooth flywheel. Most were produced with the 10 1/2" setup. I have the 11" The rest of the parts from the peddles, Z bar and linkage is all the same for G bodys...the G body bellhousing of course differs from all other GM bellhousings concerning the angle of the clutch fork, the clutch fork also differs because of the bend in it. I think 81 was the last year that a manual trans was availble.
