Sara, been there, done that. Lucky for me the elky came later. We just fought over the kids and debts. I got both kids and all the debts.
The hinges can be fixed. What I did was to raise the hood as far as possible before you bend it then remove the hinge. This is where friends come in handy. Mine broke while was away to college. One of the rivets pulled off the bracket that mounts to the fender so I begged a favor from the dorm maintence man. (Always make friends with the guy with the tools) We snapped the linkgage back into position, held it with a C-clamp and welded the back. Just for fun I painted it black. It held for the next 5 years.
