That engine is bad news. That elky would be a more productive vehicle if you ripped out the engine/trans/driveshaft and hooked a big rubber band from the front chassis to the rear end. The acceleration would be better too.
My father had an Oldsmobile with that engine in it. When the two oversised batteries could get it to crank up, it was a DOG!
If you want to buy it, replace the engine/trans and probably change the rearend gear ratio, It would be a useful elky. Otherwise, you are getting into the biggest mechanical/electrical problem you have ever seen in your life.

As described it seems like the current bid, $500 is a lot of money for an Elky in this conditon sight unseen. Everybody knows these diesels are junk but a few of us know some tricks to keep 'em goin'
