Hello!
I am a new owner of a 1971 El Camino, 350/350 auto matching numbers.
When I brake to a stop sign or traffic light there is a loud click noise coming from the brakes or suspension? I can't tell which?
The sound was similar to tapping the rear drum with a hammer with the wheel off. I checked the rear brakes and found the pads down to the rivetes. I replaced the brake shoes and rear wheel cylinders. the noise did not go away?
I do see that I have air bags in the rear coil springs, tried inflating them but they have a rupture. The right rear shock looks like it maybe leaked its fluid because it is black with dirt on the lower half?It is gas adjustable - KYB.
I checked the axle play on each side, 1/32nd inch in and out and about 3 degrees of turning. Same on both sides. 12 bolt rearend.
Checked for worn ujoints, seam OK. I thought it was coming from the rear but my passenger listened and suggested from the front?
Anyone else experenced this ? Did 71's have air shocks from the factory?

If it is from the front, could be a loose fitting pad shifting in the caliper. Yes there were air shocks from the factory. _________________ Jim

Good call Canted! I have disc brakes up front, and found the outer brake pads had alot of play in the calipers. I rigged up some spacers to keep the pads from moving and this ended the loud clicking noise during braking.
Thank you,
Patrick

Your welcome. You can sometimes give the turned part of the pad frame a whack with a hammer to tighten them up. Test fit them, then if sloppy, take them back off and hammer accordingly. _________________ Jim
