GM installed air shocks on El Caminos, Olds 442's, etc, from the factory, so I wouldn't see any problems with what you want to do.

What are your plans for the car? Personally I dont care for air shocks. If you want to be able to haul things, air bags in the coil springs work better when you need them for weight. I would run gas shocks at all four corners and have the air bags for special occasions.

hey tom,
the elky is a daily driver and i wont be hauling much of anything. I just thought air shocks in the rear would be the easiest because thats whats there now and i can just swap the old ones out for new ones and be able to stiffen them when needed. do you think i should just do 4 gas shocks then? if so, which ones would you recommend? should i go with some adjustable ones?
thanks

Spencer99,

I'm mid restoration on my 75 SS. Mine had air shocks in rear and i decided to go with gas shocks front/rear and then put the Firestone airbags in the rear springs. While I haven't put the car back on the ground yet i can tell you the gas shocks mounted up fine in the rear. Just be prepared that removing the upper shock bolts can be tough as it's difficult to find room to get a wrench on top of the bolts. Might be easier on your 73.

Best of Luck

I've always liked Bilstein shocks. You can get them at Auto Zone, they have a lifetime warranty and are a nice ride. Pretty much any gas shock will give you a better ride then air shocks. If you dont have the scratch for Bilsteins, see what else is listed at the auto parts store. You could probably get all four shocks for around $100.00 or so.

when I replaced the air shocks on my 87 I went with monroe magnums up front and monroe coil overs in the rear , thos mags sure stifened up the front and the coil overs sure helped shore up the old springs in the back it takes corners nice and flat with little body roll but still a nice ride for daily driving jim
