Well like I said, it "might" make it run cooler but I didn't elaborate on that. It's possible that you could pull a bit of timing out of it thus cooling down the combustion chamber and transfer less heat through the block to the coolant. Even to me that's a stretch but I've seen weirder things happen.

Thing is if a cooler, denser air charge had no effect on carbureted vehicles there wouldn't have been so many models from multiple manufacturers offering it on their carbureted models. It's far cheaper to stick on a fake scoop than to engineer a functional one.

Let's not forget about all those pro-stock guys with 1200CFM carbs running in the NHRA. They don't allow Fuel Injection yet unless something has changed in the rules in the past year. A big scoop over an equally big carb is effectively ram air.

The whole idea is to cool the air charge down as much as you can before it gets to the combustion chamber. Yes it will pick up heat along the way but it will still be far more dense than the equivalent non-ram air setup.

Superchargers are in effect ram air pumps and they make whole kits that actually encase the carb to better control air flow. Turbo chargers work better with bigger intercoolers because they provide a denser, cooler air charge as well.

All this means nothing on an engine that can't take advantage of the effect though. As I mentioned in my earlier post, most of the factory setups had different carb setups and in some cases different cam profiles.

Of course I'm old enough to have actually seen these cars in action before they got to be collectors items. Not that I was old enough to own one or even drive one though Happy

As for fun in a 229, I never had much fun with it. Might have been nice in a van or something. Even after the hopped up rebuild it still wasn't as good as a 350.

Happy

I don't doubt you are right Snaggle. And I appreciate you taking the time to explain it. You make perfect sense to me. I also appreciate MHamilton explaining about what the heat stove does and what no having one would cause. I guess I had an idea what it did but not what the effect of not using it would do.

Thanks to all for your input.

As the old saying goes:

There is no replacement for displacement!
