On the 5th gens, is the fuel sock usually disintegrated by now?

I have not ever had the tank on my '80 out, but it seems there's quite a bit of fine particulate in my carb and its paper filter. Just noticed the replacement sock in one of the part catalogs.

Thanks,
-Michael

Screen in the tank should be plastic. Only way to tell for sure is drop the tank and look.

If it looks like reddish/brown sand it's more likely to be rust flaking off the inside of the tank.

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. Last time I had the carb open, the bowl was filled with a very fine, brown powder (like talcum powder). Wasn't sure how it got through the paper filter, but figured if it went through the filter it would also go through the jets. I did clean that out--haven't checked it since then.

I thought it might have been moisture in the gas, but that didn't make sense for a powder.
