Painting Need opinions

I've read through dozens of posts and I have some particularly complex problems to contend with so hopefully some of you have some opinions/ suggestions for how I should proceed.

First of all my childhood best friend came for a visit 3 years ago and started this project. The body of my 86 el camino did not need to be brought down to bare metal but he did so with good intentions while I was working. He then sprayed a rust inhibitive self etching primer on the entire body light sanded that, did what little bondo work the body needed and then put a refinishers select 2k primer on. As this was always a project car I've not done much with it in the last 3 years and he left it like that in my garage. Recently I started working on it again. There were several spots where he burned through both the primer and rus inhibitive primer and some surface rust had formed. I sanded that and hit it with ospho and let it dry good then came back and touched all of those spots up with more rust inhibitive self etching. Now I've hit those spots with 400 wet/dry paper (just for adhesion) and am going to hit it with that 2k primer again.

Now after reading all of the forums out there everyone is saying I need to do a full coat of the 2k primer over the whole car then hit it with a guide coat of black then wet sand that with 600 before even thinking about painting. Any opinions on this?

That sounds correct to me. However, I am no autobody pro. Just stick with all the same brand of products, and follow all safety protocol for each of the different products. Some of them are really dangerous.

After putting the car under proper lighting to paint the car we found all of the little flaws you could possibly imagine. So that made the decision for us we filled as much as we could with body putty and resprayed the car. Thank you for the advice on staying with the same system and being careful. I'm making sure to to both. pair of turbine type fans sucking the overspray out of the sealed garage. This week we're wet sanding all of the primer and next weekend hope to start painting and clearing.
