Hello Elbmino and welcome to the best El Camino site on the net - period.

I read your post several times and still don't think I really understand it. Have no idea what "og parts" are and "new stuff" is too vague to comment on.

u'd fnd bnch a nfo w/frm srch engn. Poke Tounge

Take care.

The search engine still may have a wealth of info on LED's and most other subjects too. Give it a try.

RE: LED's, as a rule, are not yet as bright as your incandescent bulbs. However, some bulbs have as many as 24 or more LED's so you can get the brightness you want. Three other considerations are: making sure they fit without hitting the lens, the pattern of light they give, proper resistance to turn-signal flashers.

For instance, rather than a narrow beam, you'd want as wide a beam as possible in the tail lights to take advantage of the unit reflectors. Otherwise, you could have bright bulb, but no reflection, resulting in a light that would still appear dim. Make sense?

And if you simply replace your turn signals with LED's without adding back the resistance (there are a few methods to do this), they won't flash.

LED's are cool (in more ways than one), but I suspect many ultimately conclude they aren't worth the effort and cost at this time. I'll bet I could find a more beneficial use on your Camino for the money. Just my opinion.

Hope this helps a little.

Take care.

Hey ELBMINO,

I see in your post that you got a new 350 crate. I was thinking about doing the same and was wondering:

1- where did you get it and what is a reasonable price for purchase and labor

2- being in the smog test capital of the world, is it smog legal?

My local Chevy dealer quoted me about $4000 for a new carbeurated 350 putting out a measly 200 horse but was guaranteed smog legal. I thought this was absurd and way over priced. All the other high performance engines weren't smog legal...

Regards

Sameer

I was just recently trying to put in a 350 in my elco, and my chevy dealer said i could get a 350 for 1500 and installed for 2000 more, but said it might not pass smog. and if it didn't i would get no refund on it. So i hit up auto zone and the only 350 i would be able to put in mine was a diesel engine. they have crate 305 's a base which is stock for like 975 and a high output 305 for like 1975. he turned me away from the high output and said to get the base, and purchase a mid performance cam for it and its pretty much the same. do that and maybe an edlebrock intake and he said ot would basically be the same as the H.O. I ended up going down to kragen and bought a 305 from them because it was 879, a new intake, carb, and better wires for it. it is currently being installed right now and i have plans to get better heads, but im not too sure i will be happy with just a 305 i most likely will be selling my baby. but who know i might like it just as a cruising eclo and i'll keep it and buy a 68. just use the 83 as maybe my concert car for when i have to travel cali.

83 Elky209,

regarding you Kraen 305, are they giving you a smog legal guarantee? How about the mods- will they affect smog passage? What type of power are you expecting from the new engine package?

Good Luck

i realy dont want to get my hopes up for a lot of power in a 305 engine, all the intake will do is let it breath a little better. and when i put heads on it it should push it over 200 hp. as for the engine and the intake it will pass smog. if you plan on buying a new carb for it from 82 to 88 you need to use the stock carb to pass smog, i asked them at kragen and thy called up holley and said for those years they did something different with the electric chokes. dude at kragen told me i could buy a diff carb have it installed and when it comes time to smog every 2 years just swap it with the stick one real quick. its only 4 bolts pretty much.

Welcome ElBimino! As mentioned earlier it is best to make sure you will get some smog warranties on that.

That is one thing about California that I don't miss. Florida has no smog checks, tests, or any of that other stuff that makes it harder and harder to enjoy your vehicles.

I've got an 89 Iroc engine, tranny, and computer in mine. I love it.

Guys tons of parts suppliers like Edelbrock, Headmen, MSD, Accel and plenty others offer aftermarket parts for the Small Block Chevy engine that are CARB approved and that makes them SMOG legal in all states.

You can put together a good strong power plant for your Elky that will pass SMOG checks and the inspectors won't give you guff about it. Just make sure they say 50 state legal or CARB approved before you buy. If it says not for street use then it's not street legal.

GM performance parts sells Crate Small Blocks reasonably priced with some warrantee in some cases. They are NEW engines not rebuilt. The Block and rotating assemblies are neither Legal or Illegal till you build them to some point. It is how you build it that makes it a legal or non-smog engine.

Good Luck and have fun with it.
