Ok

I got a 1978 El Camino the other day with no motor but has a good 350 turbo trans in it

I am putting in a 305 out of a 1984 Pontiac Parisienne that has 40000 on it...it has the 700R4 trans in it

It would be easy just to put the new motor in and hook it up to the 350 turbo cause its already in the car and no drive shaft work etc.

But I read that MPG will be much better wuth the 700R4

But then i also read that this 700R4 is JUNK cause its a pre 1987

I dont want to put it in and it go out in 10k miles etc.

I would rather use the 350 turbo FOR THE TIME BEING till i got the $$$ to get a later model 700

I dont do much interstate driving at all...just drive around town under 60 mph

What would you guys do?

The 1984 700R4 or the 250 Turbo for the time being?

Nothing wrong with a TH350 with the right rear axle ratio ie. 2.41, 2.73. If I was going to buy a trans I would go for a 200R4, same length as the TH350, no drive shaft length mods required and a very good transmission. As I recall the best ones are '86 and later.

Can't tell you much about the 700R4, but I doubt it would be troublesome behind a 305 engine.

Just like Doug said you will have to modify your drive shaft and change your shifter. 350 has 1 2 D and the 700 has 1 2 3 D . The cross member will have to move.

2.41, 2.73 gears?

What did the car come with in 1978 with a 305?

Clean the front of the right axle tube near the differential housing and post the letters and numbers here. The codes will tell what you have. The members here will tell you or direct you to the forum topic that has a chart. Use a wire brush and solvent on a rag to get the axle tube really clean in order to see the code.
