While there are no dues or fees for membership at El Camino Central, we do rely upon member contributions to keep the site and server running smoothly. As membership grows, so does site usage. Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely slow page loading. To answer the question, yes, there is a way to jump forward to a certain page...there are actually 3 ways that I can think of off the top of my head right now.

One way is using your web browser's Favorites/Bookmarks. When you come to a certain page and wish to stop and return to it later simply go to Favorites(internet explorer) or Bookmarks(firefox) and select "Add to favorites" or "Bookmark this page" and save it on file.

Another simple way is to just click on the current tab that you're viewing the page on and drag it to your desktop or a folder in your "My Documents." Doing this will automatically create a shortcut file that you can double click on at any time to access the page.

Lastly, there is a little more complicated way which requires understanding the forum's URL coding and a little bit of basic math. If you look at the current page you'll notice that the URL is listed as "http://elcaminocentral.com/ftopict-26904.html". The way the forum is setup each page after the first is ordered in increments of 15. That means that page 2 of this topic will be listed as "http://elcaminocentral.com/ftopict-26904-15.html", page 3 will be listed as "http://elcaminocentral.com/ftopict-26904-30.html", page 4 will be listed as "http://elcaminocentral.com/ftopict-26904-45.html" and so on. See the pattern? The only thing to remember is that since the ordering starts on page 2 you will have to subtract 15 from the total. So the equation is "X x 15 - 15". For example, if you want page 10, you will do "10 x 15 - 15" and your total will be 135, meaning the URL for page 10 of this topic will be "http://elcaminocentral.com/ftopict-26904-135.html"

Sure there is a little work involved, but it's definitely possible.

Oh, and I co-sign on the idea for a "No Whining" emoticon. Laugh

I have made a donation in the past. A couple times. I just don't think that I will again in the future. It is a very fun site to visit....which I usually do for a few minutes a couple times a week.
It used to be a better site is all I was trying to say. Just like the strangers garage....if the tools slowly quit working, I would quit coming around as much and not hang out as long when I do. And I would not contribute as much to help keep it running.
If that upsets you 87. Wellll to bad.

Simply making a couple of donations isn't going to do as much as actually contributing to the community by keeping it active. If you think the site isn't as good as it used to be then maybe you could make some positive suggestions to make it better or something instead of coming in here and jacking someone's topic to go off on a rant about a few minor flaws.

Think about this...you have a post count of 171 in 5 years with most of the posts being in the General BS Topics and 5 of them being in just this topic alone.

Not trying to start any wars or anything, just pointing out what's there. Hopefully you can see it and try to put a little more effort into keeping the site an active and positive place.

Are we being judged on our post count?
If I have a higher one does it make me more worthy of being here?

I believe you have totally missed the point of what he was saying.
One can make suggestions without putting down the site, which is counter productive to it. Why do so many think everything should travel at the speed of light on the internet. Slow down, relax and enjoy the great posts and members that come here. Lots of great people if you take the time to know them. Cool

Thanks Johnny, you're right, he totally misunderstood.

By mentioning your post count, Bryan, I was saying that it's kind of ridiculous for someone to complain about a site that they hardly contribute to. That's not to say that you haven't contributed, just that your activity isn't much and most if it is in the General BS Topics. If you have suggestions to improve the site you should post them up in the Site Topics forum. And if you want to help keep the site as a whole active you should try to post more in the other non-general bs forums.

As far as the site being slow, I'll agree that it's no Speedy Gonzales, but I haven't had any problems with it ever being too slow. Maybe you should check your internet connection or upgrade to a faster service.

Papa John makes a good point. This forum is all about helping each other, but it's also about a bunch of people who share a common interest. Since sites like this are rare (as you admitted) you can't blame people for taking offense when the site that allows them to communicate and share ideas and opinions is bad-mouthed. Especially by another member.

Sometimes you have to embrace the thing for what it is, not your expectations of what it should be. By all means, make suggestions for improvements. But don't expect those of us who use this site as often as we use a screwdriver to sit back while someone complains about a trivial site function that many of us didn't even REALIZE wasn't working because we never worried about having to perform the extra steps.

If you think you can do it better, you should.
If you think it's too much work and it annoys you...

That IS the last you'll hear from me on the subject.

This has been an interesting thread to watch since new member Gary raised a good question. For a while, it looked like a bit of flaming and personal rancor was developing. My favorite Moderator down the road in Rhode Island showed commendable restraint, and several experienced members each added some background on why some things are not exactly "state of the art" here on ECC.

Over the years, I've had a whole laundry list of things I would like to see on this site...none of which I have any idea of how much they would cost, how much work it would be, and if they are practical, given how the site software is structured. The sole proprietor of this site, Robert More, has added some of these features and others suggested by our members over time. What most members don't really understand is that -- as Ernie so eloquently pointed out -- ECC is like a "free garage" provided by a friendly neighbor who does all the hard work and pays all of the bills. This is in his spare time, after running a small business and taking care of his family and the rest of life's normal druggery. (With able assistance from "Poltergiest" and a couple of computer-savvy Moderators, too.) Some of us use this "free garage" a lot to our own advantage, and occasionally throw in a few bucks to repair something we wore out, or to put more free supplies on the work bench here.

But it still gets back to one guy, Robert More, to decide what he can do, what he wants to do, and when he can get to it. None of us decide or vote on what happens on ECC from a technical perspective. It's not a democracy here, nor a co-op. I used to call it a benevolent dictatorship, but I like Ernie's analogy better, a good neighbor who lets us use his garage for free, and who appreciates it when some of us contribute to replenish the supplies.

And that brings me to the point in this round-about fashion. If someone has a suggestion or sees a problem, or doesn't know why some feature isn't working or available, there is little point in posting it to the general membership as new member Gary has done. None of us has any access or authority to do anything about it. Site technical issues like this are best directed to either Robert More or one of the several Moderators via PM or email. That gets the question before the right person to respond.

I don't see any reason for anyone to get heated up by 67ElkyBryan's reply, nor question his motivations or loyalty to the site. I hope he continues to log in whenever he feels the need and post his Elky-related comments in whatever Forum is appropriate for him. Let's remember to never "shoot the messenger" when someone politely raises an issue or question.

I appreciate "Low75"s response...even though I would not be able to follow those instructions which I'll never be able to remember, but some younger members will understand them immediately. Let's end this thread on a positive note and go on to another topic that will help us keep our old Elky's on the road a few years longer. Best regards to all.

I contributed by sending my supported donation. I personally love this site for all the helpful information. I've learned a lot about Elkys. Sort of wish I didn't ask that simple question though but I do want to thank all that did answer my question. Very helpful. Sorry some of the others got a little upset.
