I just pulled the tank on my '84 Elk.
How do I tell the gallon capacity?
Someone once mentioned if the sending unit is working, re-use it.
My gauge at full reads between half and 3/4 tank so I never know how much gas I have.
I found the sticker for the tank on top the tank when I pulled it that has part #'s on it.
One part # accross the top is 14091336 in a white section.
On the left side in a yellow section is another # below what reads "Tank ASM" and that # is similar. 14091366.
Do these #'s mean anything to anyone?
Is the ASM a tank assembly # and the oer is just the tank part #?
Help!
I want to order everything I need so I don't have to do this again.
Thanks & Aloha!!
Scott

I believe most of the 5th Gen cars had a 22 gal tank. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

It may be the float is sinking, or the float rod is bent, or it's binding on something inside the tank.

If your sending unit isn't reading correctly I would replace it, I don't think they are very expensive. And since you already have it out, now is a good time to get it done. One less issue to worry about later, the gas tank isn't the easiest thing to get out.

14091336 is the GM part number for the 17 gallon gas tank.

All gas sending units, whether 22 gallon or 17 gallon, read 90 ohms at full and 0 ohms at empty. While the tank is down pull the sending unit out and test it.

If you order a 22 gal tank for a replacement do a search and find the threads on fixing the venting on it BEFORE you install it. There are a couple of threads I remember. One shows adding a vent tube along side the filler neck and the other shows cutting the neck and adding a tube inside.

http://www.gmpartcatalog.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=searchCatalogOEM&siteid=214551

I hope you can open this link.
If not, type in the p/n below and select chevrolet/geo.
Part #14091336 in the above link lists a 22 gal tank.
I just need to confirm that the tank size is or isn't crucial when selecting the sending unit. HELP again!
I have to order it either way cuz none of the shops here in Hawaii carry the stock unit.
Aloha,
Scott

The way I read the discription is it is for a Veh. (w/o 22 gal tank)"WITHOUT A 22 GALLON TANK"
But again, that's the way I'm reading it.

Yea, that's how it looks to me too, but it would sure be simpler if they just said what it is and not what it isn't.. Confused
Got to read between the lines I guess..
87ElCamino, you appear to have hit the nail on the head. I guess I need to listen to the experience here on the board instead of trying to second guess.
So, where would be the best place to order a sending unit kit from?
Thanks for ALL YOUR HELP!!

Search is your friend. This has been discussed before. Read this thread.

Thanks for all your help. E-bay was a dead end and opg's part @ about $180 was on back order for the next 4 weeks. Summit did some digging and found one in stock for $99. It'll be here in a couple days.
Aloha, Scott

Mad Yes that's a good price...if it were the right part!
The tabs didn't line up unless I rotated the sending unit 180 degrees which would point the fuel line in the wrong direction...backwards..
So I called Summit and the guy said, oops the part description says "except for wagons and elcaminos". Mad
The right part from ac delco = $199 instead of $99. I'm again shopping for the part and am running into dead ends and back ordered by 4-5 weeks. Just thought I'd vent.. Evil or Very Mad
Off and searching/shopping! LOL
