I was driving and all of a sudden there was a slight buring smell. Then when I turned off my car, the doors would not unlock like they usually do when I turn off the ignition. Then I checked my radio and it wouldn't turn on and my interior light would not turn on either.
Would a fuse make a smell if it burnt out or would there only be a smell because of a burnt wire? Any Ideas where to start to hunt down the problem? Sad

I had a similar problem, ended up being a short in the cigarette lighter.

Same problemo...lighter. Check the fuse, replace it if burndt, throw lighter away, use matches or disposible lighter or better yet quite smoking in your car...it STINKS it up! And oh by the way, I'm a smoker so don't try to preach to me, I get enough of that from my dear old 73 year old mother...49 years of preaching and I can take anything you can dish out. Laugh

That is weird it sounds like that is a common problem. Thanks for the info, I will unplug it. I used it for my cell phone. I noticed that when I bought the Camino the lighter was unplugged.

I went & got a lighter out of a later model grand prix. They are the same thing. I do not smoke but I need the plug. Cool

It's the 20A courtesy/clock fuse. If it blows you'll lose the power door locks, power antenna, audio alarm module, glove box light, footwell courtesy lights, radio clock, cigarette lighter, dome light, vanity mirror light, and worst of all...the horn. Shocked

I had the same thing happen when I plugged my cell phone adaptor into the cigarette lighter. If you don't plug it in just right it will blow the fuse.

I'm the worst type of non-smoker because I'm an reformed smoker. I quit over 25 years ago.

I agree that you blew a fuse, but I've never experienced or heard of a blown fuse smelling like a burned wire, not to say that it's not possible. Seems to me that you need to inspect the lead to the cigar lighter (yes most manufacturers still call them a cigar lighter--a cigarette is a small cigar and yes, I'm a smoker) and see where its frayed and/or close to a ground source. The wire to the lighter passes several sharp edges near the ash tray and could easily short-out occasionally but work at other times. A repair of the wire should be simple and then you'd have the socket back for the cell phone or radar detector. Or course, you don't need a radar detector.

It was the Fuse and the wires seem fine. Maybe the fuse plastic cover made a weird scent after blowing. Cig Lighter now unplugged for good
Thanks!!
