I have a 72 El Camino which I inherited from my father. In order to get it transfered I have to have an inspection which requires matching the VIN from the car to the one on the title. So far I've been unable to locate the VIN on the car. I removed the dash and saw what could have been the remains of the tag (2 rivets holding down a piece of metal approx 2.5 x 1/4 inch) I've heard that the VIN number is also stamped on the frame and elsewhere on the vehicle. If anyone has an idea where please let me know. Thanks

I'm not sure where the VIN number is stamped on the frame on your El Camino, maybe a service manual can provide that information. However, I can tell you where it's NOT located. The book "Chevrolet Parts Interchange Manual" by Paul A. Herd states that :"A frame's identification number is stamped on the outer left-hand side-member, just ahead of the bumper bracket attaching slot. The part number appears along with an abbreviated version of the manufacturer's name. For example, if Pontiac were the manufacturer, the ID would read : Pon.(for Pontiac), S- A.O. Smith, or P.P.S.-Parish Pressed Steel, followed by the part number. The bottom line indicates the build date and shift." Part number for 1968-1972 El Camino or Chevelle station wagon would be 6263665.
I don't know of any other numbers appearing on the frame but this may help in your search for the VIN and reduce potential confusion. Hope you find the VIN and when you do, please let me know so I can check my frame for authenticity.

Thanks for the help, I finally got everything transfered due to an understanding DMV worker so I no longer need to locate an alternate VIN. Cheverolet called me back to inform me that they couldn't give me the "hidden" VIN locations and that the only way to get them would be to contact law enforcement. Not sure how much stock I place in that but I thought I'd pass the info along.

On my 1977 Elky the vin is stamped on the frame. Left side, the last crossmember on the drivers side, in front of the rear bumper. You can read it with the bumper removed, but I had to use a inspection mirror when the bumper was on the car.
