Hi everybody- regards from Finnish Chevy girl! I bought (or so I thought) '76 Elky (6 cyl) but now I've problems with codes. Could someone please help me?
Tag says:
ST 77 1AC80 B 097307 BDY
TR 64B A52 36L 36U PNT
11A60 . X. - 0935
I tried to decode it myself - are these conclusions right? So it is Chevrolet (1), AC (??), El Camino(80), assembly plant Baltimore (B), trim light beige (64B), front seat bench (A52), paint some kind of red (?), build date 1st week in November (year 76 or 77 ??), 60 (?), X (?), 0935 (?)...
I would be very pleased if someone clarifies me this missing information. Thank you in advance! _________________ '77 El Camino, '72 Chevelle SS 454, '62 Simca Ariane SL, '73 VW Bobble 1300

You are very very close. But it does indicate that the El Camino is a '77.
ST 77 is the model year
1 is Chevrolet
AC80 is El Camino 2dr Pickup Delivery
B is Baltimore
097307 is Production Sequence
TR 64B is Buckskin Cloth
A52 is Bench
36L is Firethorn Poly (lower)
36U is Firethorn Poly (upper)
11A is November 1st week it was built.

Thank you Jay!
So quite much was OK. Only the last line is now open. Does someone know what these 60. X. - 0935 mean?
But what has happened now? The VIN tag you said should be like "1C80D7B097307" but it isn't. The Production Sequence is different!?! The VIN tag in my Elky is "1C80D7B453279". Are there two different cars and they have been put together or what??? Oh no - now I'm worried....

I might have messed up here. Hope I didn't cause to much grief.
I went back to my book (Catalog of Chevelle, Malibu, and El Camino ID numbers) and here is what they say.
VIN last six digits (in your case 453279) "represent the basic production numbers. Starting number is 100001/up.
On the cowl tag (called a Body number plate) the number to the LEFT of the word "Body" is a six digit number (again, in your case,097307). This is called the "Production Sequence". Further defined as "the body number is the production serial number of the body. Starting with 100001/up"
I've always been under the impression that the two numbers should be the same, but the more I think about it, that is wrong. I think the production number in the cowl tag number is strictly for the body only. The VIN number production number is the sequence number of the complete El Camino.
Lets see if some other members can correct and clarify for us.
