Replacing speedo on 72

My son and I just got his first car, he is just turning 16 and what better way to start driving than one of the coolest cars around! But, the damn speedo has quit working, the shop we took it to for a brake job and to have glass packs put on said it isnt the cable but something in the dash--can anyone recommend a good replacement?

Funny, I am restoring a '72 with my 15 year old son! I'd watch eBay for a replacement speedo but would change the cable first (cheap test). Make sure to search for Chevelle and Elky's as they shared the same dash. Thanks Dave, the Dakota Digital is pretty impressive but a bit over the top for us. We are getting it back from the shop this week and will check the cable first thing. We will check on ebay, a buddy just told us an after market round speedo with a new fabricated dash would work (thank god he knows how to do that stuff!)

If you want a round speedo, and a tach too, look at the SS dashes you can get both that way. Dave

If yer really in a bind over that speedo, I have a spare one. It's outta my '71... works fine. Gimme a ping if you REALLY can't find one.
Hopefully the cable just came out of the clamp at the speedo head.

Thanks guys! I am also hoping the cable just came out of the clamp at the head--I should find out this weekend as we do a bit of wrench turing back to the 70's with our best friend and gear head "Crazy Eddie" I will post what we come up with after the surgery is complete.

Don't forget the other end. The transmission end of my cable rounded off at the tranny. Also the gears can cause problems. I'd buy a new cable, (not that expensive) plug it in at the tranny, and watch the speedo end as you drive a bit. If the cable end is rotating, you know that the gears are OK. It can be a real _itch to get the speedometer end of the cable loose.
