While there are no dues or fees for membership at El Camino
Central, we do rely upon member contributions to keep the site and server running smoothly. As membership grows, so does
site usage. Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely
slow page loading. Many of you may have also noticed the new member rankings used to recognize supporting members.

Posted: Fri Dec 10, 2004 8:28 pm Post subject: Free Users Web Space
As the result of hacking, spamming and free web space abuse I have been forced to take the free web space feature offline temporarily. In the past El Camino Central has offered free unlimited web space to members to use as a place on the web for them to share pictures and information about their El Caminos with other El Camino Central/NECOA members. It was brought to my attention last evening that many have been using it as an "image" host to post avatars and various other images on other forums and some are even using it to host images for ebay auctions.... This I varified by scanning the server logs. While this may seem a drastic measure, if you multiply this by the number of members abusing the priviledge, you would find that the practice has a huge impact on server performance. Since elcaminocentral.com is not a web host, and has not charged in the past for web space, I have been placed in a position to re-think the web space situation.
First, I do not want to penalize those who have already registered for the web space and are currently using it in the manner it is intended.
Secondly, I have edited the server to disallow all image hosting outside of elcaminocentral.com.
This means you may still host your avatars within elcaminocentral.com as well as your images for use in your posting on elcaminocentral.com. In other words, members may not "hotlink" images to be used on other outside forums or ebay auctions.
Lastly, I have not decided whether to allow new registrations for the web space or not. The bottom line is I do not run hosting company nor do I have the time or energy to monitor users web space. I have considered offering the space to contributing members, thereby assuring new sign ups are legitimate and not a spammer or hacker.
El Camino Central is far from self supporting, we depend upon member voluntary contributions to keep the web site up and running smoothly.
So, in closing, please remember that image hosting for other sites, ebay auctions and hotlinking are in reality bandwidth theft and tax server performance and web site loading speed.
Thank you everyone for making this the finest group El Camino owners anywhere and the best little automotive website on the internet!
I used pictures on my web page for ebay once. I didn't know that was a problem Sorry!! I'd like to do a lot of updates to my page though. When do you think I'll be able to do that? More importantly when will the sites be accesable, if ever? I spent a lot of time on mine. BUMMER, but an understandable one. _________________ -JOHN
The web space should be used exclusively for members to show case their interest in El Camino's and also to show case other personal interests.
It should be kept so it does not degrade the performance of the rest of the web site and should not be a burden to administer.
I would go along with whatever steps Robert believes are in the best interest of ECC / NECOA. And if that means, only contributing members are allowed to use the web space, so be it. And if new rules are put into place, as we continue to grow, then that is O.K. with me also. _________________ JW - NECOA #768 2011 El Camino SS - http://elcaminocentral.com/users/a73elkyss/.

Just once isn't an issue....making a habit of it is! You should be able to access and view your site now, like I said, I do not want to penalize current users. _________________ El Camino Central Founder/AdministratorAuto A/C & Electrical Shop Owner, ASE Master
