I just finished replacing the heater core on my '76. Whew, what a bugger! Anyway after I reinstalled everything I tried out the heater and it would not switch from heat to defrost to vent. I checked my vacuum line to the ball on the fenderwell and it was ok. The fan is working fine & it is putting out plenty of heat. The temp cable is properly connected to the heater box. My truck was an A/C truck that is now missing everything a/c related from the cowl forward. I must of messed with something during the R&R of the heater core. Ideas?

The vent door on my 76 had to have a new end made for the cable running from the dash controller to the Heater box. I used a crimp on Wire lug over 5 years ago and its still holding. The original plastic end that goes over the cable end comming from the dash unit. So I'd check that too.

It actually sounds like the vacuum pot on the heater box is not functioning. You can use one of those brake bleeders (Vacuum type) to check to see if the pot operates. If it works with the vacuum bleeder then I'd look to see where the vacuum is escaping.

After 30 years those old vacuum lines have seen better days so they could be leaking anywhere. Have you noticed a stumble or the engine running differently since that happened? If the leak is bad enough you should. So its either that pot or a leak from what I can tell.
