Hot water circulates through the heater core all the time on some models, others have a vacuum operated water flow valve in the engine compartment. Another vacuum operated diverter causes air to either pass thru the heater core to the passenger compartment or blocks the airflow. Sounds like you may have a problem with the diverter actuator or the vacuum line from the heater control lever assembly to the actuator, or perhaps a bad valve on the dash mounted lever assembly. This leak will be the source of the hiss. It's not too hard to get in there and check the system out - but do it before it's 100 degrees in the garage!

I still have the vacuum operated valve on my 74. It's a kind of L shaped tube with a small vaccum line running to a disk shaped vacuum housing. One side of it is a tube that runs up to the vacuum disk and then there's a tube that comes out of the center of the vacuum disk that hooks to my heater hose that goes back to the firewall where my heater core hooks up.
The other kind of setup is likely on the back of your AC slider assembly. Buried within the bundle of vacuum hoses that plug into that slider will be one vacuum line that goes to a diaphram cannister that contols the opening and closing of the door that sits in front of the heater core located inside the ductwork on the firewall.
Just a shot here but I know for sure about the one on the intake manifold.

just out of curiosity....is there like an "easy fix" like until i have time to work on it....like is there anyway, i can stop heat from entering the cabin? cuz i hate not being able to control the tempreture in my car.....and it sucks cuz my a/c went out last year....so i can't cool it down...but yeah....if u know of anything else that would be amazing

thanx, you're awesome....

Pinch off one of the heater hoses to prevent hot water from entering the heater core. _________________ El Camino Central Founder/AdministratorAuto A/C & Electrical Shop Owner, ASE Master
heck just take the heater box out of the loop. Drain system, disconect both heater hoses then cut yourself a 12 to 14 inch bypass and hook that up to water pump / manifold outlets _________________ Chillin in Lauderdale

that sounds like a RAD idea, but won't it be a big pain in the rear end to put back in when winter comes back around? _________________ 84 GMC Caballero
