I want to restore the AC in my '72. As far as I can tell, everything except the compressor and hoses are intact and untouched by the hands of previous owner-Bubba.

http://homepage.mac.com/kayak/AC/PhotoAlbum59.html

I swear there are teeth marks on the busted aluminum hose end, as if he chewed it off. Bubba did do me the courtesy, however, of leaving me the lower support bracket for the compressor in place on the driver's side exhaust manifold.

I know I'll need a new compressor and to replace the hoses...what else would I be looking at?

I'm not going to tacke this myself. Assuming the parts left are in working order, and I can figure out the wiring mess, once I get the hoses and compressor in place, I'll take it to a shop to have them clean out the system, check for leaks and do the conversion to 134.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Also, anyone got a clue how much the shop wil charge me, assuming they only have to clean and refill the system.

Thanks,
Kurt

I don't have their web address just off hand but Vintage Air would more than likely have the pieces you'll need to repair that.

Robert More, acauth1(sp?), our adminstrator, is a guru with AC if you can get him maybe he knows of other places

By the way,

Freeon is about 10.00 a can/Lb. (R134) your truck will hold about 2.2 give or take Lbs. Evacuation of the system would run probably 45 or so and a new dryer is going to cost about the same. so my guess is around 200.00 counting everything possibly more.

But that is a guess.

I'm no expert on air conditioning, and especially on a 72 camino, but on 70 caminos there is a vacuum can attach onto the air conditioner housing, and a vacuum operated hose shutoff on the passenger side inner fender. Much of the controls on the air system are operated via vacuum.

I highly recommend the Chevrolet Factory Assembly Instructional Manual for your specific car and year. I've not found anything better to see how parts really go back together with the proper number of washers, nuts, ect. It is quite excellent. You can get them from OPG, but likely any after market store would have them.
