my brother recently bought an 87 iroc with a 350 tpi. After doing a fair amount of work to it something is seriously wrong with it. The motor is an absolute dog and i cant figure it out, probably because im not that familiar with the multiport injection system (the tpi in this case). Fuel pressure regulator, egr valve, complete ignition, fuel filter, and the air filter have all been replaced but it is still a dog. Any and all suggestions would be apreciated. Also the idle is somewhat rough, and there is no aftermarket cam in it. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you covered the logical first steps in troubleshooting that TPI. I'd recommend look for vacuum leaks next. Then things start to get more serious, like a compression test.

Can you get any trouble codes to get a clue if the computer thinks something is wrong?

I ALSO OWN A 1991 CAMARO WITH A STOCK TPI 350. AS FAR AS WORK BEING DONE TO IT , WHAT KIND OF WORK? START BY CHECKING RESTRICTED EXHAUST, IF VALVE ADJUSTMENT WAS DONE BE SURE IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY. IF DISTRIBUTER WAS REMOVED, DID IT FALL ON THE RIGHT TEETH? IS TIMING CORRECT? IS FIRING ORDER CORRECT? YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO CHECK COMPRESSION, MAY LEAD TO BENT VALVES, OVER ADJUSTED VALVES. CHECKED SPARK PLUG GAP?

thanks guys the info was helpful. I was planning on checking the timing, just need to buy a timing light. the vacume lines do appear to be good. Ive heard that an iac valve can affect the idle and performance on the tpi motor. Could this be the problem? If so where is it even located?? Thanks

The IAC could definately be a problem. Do a google search to find instructions on how to do this (thirdgen.org used to have instructions, but the site is being repaired; they may be back up now). Also check to see that the TPS is adjusted correctly. Getting any codes?

Before you jump into your TPI with both feet I strongly encourage you to do some research and read up on the system, how it works and what causes what to happen. Parts can get expensive and add up very fast with little results. Do yourself a favor and check this web site it covers installation in great detail but also has an outstanding troubleshooting section. ChevyThunder.com. As an example there is a very specific proceedure for checking the timing and if not done correctly you may do more harm than good. Harald K
