pm Post subject: Free El Camino Restoration Packet Fron Chevrolet
Hello everyone, I recently became a member and I thought I'd share some great information with anyone looking to restore an El Camino. Approximately 3 months ago I recieved the information that Chevrolet will give any owner, a free Chevy "Truck" Restoration Packet"if you call 1 (800) 222-1020. Last year I aquired a 68 Elky and I absolutely have no history on the car. I'm in the process of the ground up when I accidently ran across the number on line, but the information was kind of sketchy and I was'nt sure of the details so I blew it off. After some time and frustation with the car, I thought I'd call to see if we (ELKY OWNERS) qualify for it. The answer is yes and what I recieved is the best information on the "1968 (my year requested) El Camino Series" that I could ever have . It shows COMPLETE CAR SPECTS on "EACH" YEAR MODEL and OPTIONALS. Talk about a resource, I personally like having this packet in lew of the individual "vin specs" I just received because it shows me everything about my year and I learned more about my own drive train, upgrades, and everything that came with it, than I ever would have. It taught me exactly what I have, what is not factory make, and the difference in mine compared to every other 68. They also include a 45 page Past Model Information Guide from GM that has several links to clubs , parts and sales, publications etc... Overall this packet is well worth its weight in gold. They require the year, vin number and name and address. Apparantly this is available for purchace on all Chevy vehicles but, this was absolutely free to owners of trucks. I hope that it is still available free, I received it about 2 months ago.It is so great to know what I have. I really dont think I could have began ( or more likely finish) my restoration without this. I took this on as a challenge to myself (and you men), and ground up is turning out to be....umm.... quite interesting. I have always admired this year and model, and low and behold, about a year and a half ago, I bought the car. The only draw backs at the time was that I was working out of town on a construction job , I went out with some of the boys after work to a regularly frequented bar, the owner of the place had just parked the car out side to sell it that day and the more I drank and the more all the guys were talking "cheap" about wanting to buy it, the more I wanted it. I asked the owner to start it, heard that motor roar and went to the bank. So basically,I was drunk and it was dark! When I picked it up a week later I realized what I'd accually bought needed quite a make-over.There is rust popping up everywhere, the brakes were shot, an exhuast manifold gasket was missing , the passenger seat is gone, the weather trim is dry rotting, the driver side door would'nt open and someone down the line added a sunroof! All and all I did'nt do too bad for the price, Its a 1968 Custom, all the numbers match, with these Optionals: Turbo- Fire 327 (275hp) V8, Warner T16D Trans., Dual Exhuast, heavy duty suspension, radiator, battery and generator Air Shocks, tinted windows, Rally Wheel/Mags, Strato Buckets, Radio, Air Conditioning, Special Hood w/ simulated grills (SS),Extra Crome / mirror, Power Brakes & Steering and Posi Traction. ETC...The motor is rebuilt w/ headers at 57,000 miles and runs great. I made the decision to do the ground up when I realized I would have to put new floor pans in, I learned how to weld and grind years ago and at the time, I thought I could just do it myself so I would'nt have to pay for it. I really didn' realize what ground up intailed. This is a lot of work and its not cheap, finding the affordable replacement parts as been strickly research at this point. Ive focused on degreasing, disassembling, cutting, grinding and sanding at this point along with all the learning. I dont know if it's because I'm female or what, but I just didnt know anything about cars other than a few basic part replacements and this project has taught me so much, I am so into this restoration, I love it. I found this site today and I cant believe my fortune! Between the Restoration Packet and this site, I'll have her in top condition in no time. Good luck and I hope the info helps. _________________ "Bullets"

I saw that number on the MonteCarloSS.com tech site, but never got around to dialing it! I was wondering what they gave you. Sounds well worth it. It's free anyway, so who could beat that! _________________ -JOHN

What I recieved were two stapled pamplets of Chevrolet origin. The first one is titled 1968 Original El Camino Series. It has the two V6 models (13380-Standard, 13580-Custom) and the three V8 models ( 13480-Standard, 13680-Custom, 13880-SS 396)pictured and listed with dimention and curb weights. The overall contents are not listed but the paperwork includes Standard Equipment, Optional Equipment, Feature Groups, Optional Power Teams and Axles, Optional Power Assist, Other Optional Equipment and Tire and Wheel Combinations (Showing all dispacement ratios, complacement ratios, rear axle ratios for all combos available for each model) It goes into detail on what standard feature come with each model. It shows the standard front suspension with piston diameters and piston travel for the shock absorbers and the ratio at ground, sprung capacity and deflection rate at wheel for the springs. It then goes into the applications, basic specifications and test procedures for each MOTOR either standard or optional. That gives you the Engine type (re:valve in head, etc..) Piston displacement, bore and stroke, compression ratio, carburator type, gross horsepower and gross torque. It then goes into the Exhuast Emmission Control Equipment. Detailing the difference between the Air injection Reactor or the Controlled Combustion System and wich model has them. The next Section is titled General. The contents listing: Model Identification, Serial Numbers and Identification, Regular Eqipment- Exterior, Regular Equipment- Interior, Regular Production Options and Dealer Installed Accessories and Air Conditioning Equipment You then have Sections titled Body, Chasis and Powertrains. I can not even begin to describe the detail these sections go into, but let me put it to you this way , if you want to know exactly how many amps the coil draws when the motor is idling, it's in here. These are complete spects for the entire vehicle model and options. They cover everything including which options were available to a particular model. The other packet was titled "Chevy Past Model Info" and it's pretty much a catalog of resources to buy GM Licenced Products and other helpful info on restoring a car. this info is great. _________________ "Bullets"
I just called to order mine. If anybody has a GMC Sprint, they only go back to 1985. They have one for a 71 El camino but not the Sprint. I guess it kinda shows the Sprint was pretty rare.
Can't even get a restoration book for a vehicle GM made!

P.S. but I did order the one for a 71 El camino.
The restoration packet is for Chevy Trucks only! _________________ "Bullets"
I just called to get one for my 77, and they said that they don't have these for Elkies from 60-63, 70, and 79. Hope this bit of info helps! _________________ 77 Elkie

I just called for my 77 too!
I asked about the other model years, and the customer service rep said that if they don't have a particular year, it is most likely because it is out of stock.
So call for yours, and if they don't have it now, call back in a month. _________________ Steve Frey
