hey guys, when I'm filling my car with gas and i stick the nozzle thing into the tank and turn it on it will run for about 3 gallons and then shut off, this is when i just let it fill up itself. the gas is coming back up the pipe and tripping the shutoff thing on the nozzle, and it does this when i have only put like 3 gallons in. I'm not sure if the pump is pumping to fast and the gas isn't getting into the tank fast enough and its backing up. another thing is at my local gas station there is a pump and there is a slight decline in the pavement away from the pump so my car angle down from the pump, which i think make the gas flow into the tank faster, and at that pump it will go for about 6 or 7 gallons before shutting off.
Is this normal for these older El Camino's??

My Chevelle did it, my Nova did it and my El Camino does it.

Pump it slower.

all older cars I have owned do this, I believe it is related to th filler neck and how easily the neck back fills with fluid while pumping. I find that if I just let mine pump its own, it cuts out constantly, if I raise the nozzle more vertically, I have very little trouble keeping it flowing.

Don't insert the nozzle all the way, and it will work fine.
