Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely slow page loading. Is it necessary or advisable to logout after each viewing?

I never log out. That way, when I visit the forum I can quickly see where the new posts are.

That's what I've been doing but being new to the forum and not internet literate I got to wondering if I was leaving myself open to hackers or whatever you call those demons out there in cyberspace.

When you log in a "cookie" is sent to your computer. You have the option on your computer to not accept "cookies", but browsing the web wouldn't be much fun if you did that. There is also an option on your computer to delete all "cookies". You'd be surprised how many "cookies" can accumulate on your hard drive.

Put simplistically, this "cookie" allows ECC to store information on your computer. This information lets ECC remember you. If a "cookie" from ECC exists on your computer, when you next visit the site, ECC knows that you have visited before and you had logged in. ECC knows your ID from that previous "cookie". If you log out, ECC knows that also and requires you to log in if you want to post or see your PM's.
