While there are no dues or fees for membership at El Camino Central, we do rely upon member contributions to keep the site and server running smoothly. As membership grows, so does site usage. Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely slow page loading. While I have been whittling away on the server, attempting to strenghthen us against more hacks, I have come to realize a few new things.
I do one thing and check if works, and if it does, I try to see how it effects server speed.
Needless to say, I have devoted countless hours checking and rechecking server logs and processes.
One thing that I have discovered that I have found rather disturbing from the referer logs is the use of images freely hosted on El Camino Central are being used on other sites and forums as avatars, signatures and the like. While I do not object to images being pulled from the site to be used in someone's post to get the message across, I do take issue with them being used in as avatars and in signatures. I have found that there are literally several thousands of hits on these little (some are rather large files) images throughout the day.
As an example, a 100k image being hotlinked to a site that gets 1000 hits a day uses 100MB of data transfered from our site. Multiply this over a month and you will see that's alot of bandwidth that we are paying for.
As we struggle to get the site up to speed I ask that those of you who may be using an image you have on elcaminocentral.com on another site, to please upload your image to their site or forum. Thanks all of you for making this a great El Camino community!
