I'm going to replace the stock 305 in my 87 SS and want to use a new GM crate engine. I can't decide between a ZZ4 350/350 a 350 RamJet or a carb. 502/502. I dont want the big cowl hood needed for a 502 RamJet.I'll also need a new trans. and still want to use the stock floor shifter Can a 4L60-e handle the TQ. from a 502 or is there a better choice. So far i think i like the idea of the ZZ502/502 the most. Any comments or tips from anyone who has done one of these swaps would be very helpful. Thanks

hey tough choices you have there similar to mine. I currently was going to install a lt1 and now opted for the ram jet 502 big block. you won't be disapointed. the 4l60e trans will work fine cause that is the one i am planning on using. the ram jet is going to set me back 9,000 dollars, but all well worth it. i am still puting the pieces together(frame body resto project)
p.s. i have no idea on what to do with the lt1.?

Thanks for your reply. GMPP lists the 4L60-E rated for up to 370 lb. ft. of torque leaving it almost 200 lb. ft. short of what we,ll need. The 4L85-E is rated to 460 lb. ft. which will do a RamJet 350 but still falls short of the 502 output. With the top of the RamJet being 11" above the top of the block how high of a cowl hood do you think you'll need? Maybe 6''? Thats why i'm thinking of the ZZ502/502 with a carb. instead of the RamJet. Also it will be alot easier to install. Good luck on your project. I'm going to order my engine by the end of the week as soon as i figure out which one.

i would stick with a smallblock if your going for a cruiser. and instead of a zz4, id say get a zz383 http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/perfpartsjsp/featured.jsp#12498772

TRUE ON THE POWER RATING ON THE 4L60E TRANS. TCI AND B&M MAKE TRANS TO HANDLE UP TO 600HP. MINE IS ACTUALLY GOING TO GET REBUIT TO HANDLE THE POWER. IF BIG COWL HOOD IS NOT WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR THEN CONSIDER THE ZZ4 383 OR THE FAST BURN 383 RATED AT425HP. MORE ENGINES CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.CRATEENGINEDEPOT.COM THIS IS WHERE MINE WILL BE PURCHASED FROM IN ABOUT 2 MONTHS. ONLY 40 MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE. Smile
