My R-134a converted system compressor is drooling green liquid out the snap ringed metal cap on the top of the compressor. I'm guessing it's oil.
The compressor hasn't failed yet, but it no longer cools, so I'm guessing the seal is gone, along with all the refrigerant.
If I want to change the compressor myself what all do I need to do? I'm a total rookie at a/c work, but the local military auto craft shop has all the guages, pumps, etc. to evacuate and recharge the system.
Been reading up, but still not clear on what all I need to change along with the compressor - if anything. Also, don't have a clue how to add oil to the compressor.
Can one of the guru's give a brief tutorial, or should I just suck it up and take it to an A/C repair shop? _________________ 83 Elky
Any time the system is opened, it is a good idea to replace the drier or accumulator, if that is what your system has. If the replacement compressor does not specify what referigerant it is intended for, you may want to drain the oil and refill with the proper oil as they are different. You can drain and fill through the holes that the lines connect to, the amount of oil should be specified on the compressor. Do that and then after everything is connected, evacuate and charge the system and you should be good to go. Take a good look into the discharge line when you remove it to see if the compressor may have been spitting out any metal particles. If you see any evidence of this, the entire system needs to be flushed out. _________________ Jim
