Has anyone tried this? I installed a LT1 starter motor on my 1987 El Camino SS with the originall 305. I ordered the LT1 starter from a 1997 Camaro Z-28 at Autozone, $125 with a guarantee. The size of this starter is definately considered a "mini-starter" as it weighs about 1/2 the weight of the stock starter, has a much smaller diameter but fits the factory mounting holes. You will also need to get 2 bolts from the local Chevy dealer, the original starter bolts are too long and you wll not be able to tighten the starter to the block. The solenoid has the same 2 terminals to hook up the stock wires. It all bolted up easily and works great. It has the "turbo whine" sound when you turn the key, and quickly spins the motor over. Advantages are lighter weight, smaller size makes replacing much easier with factory Y pipe, more torque to start than the original starters, and since it is farther from the exhaust it can prevent hot start problems if you have headers.
These fit the 153 tooth flexplate (I think that's the right count but may not be corret here) found on all 1 piece rear seal motors from 1986 and up. Not sure when the flexplates were changed, and if it will ffit earlier 350's, but if you have an earlier flywheel you may need to get one from a Chevy Astro Van to enjoy the same advantages, some more research will be needed to find out which fits which year.
Hope this helps,

Dave,
I have an 82 El Camino with a HO305 from an 88 Monte Carlo SS in it.
I just recently bought this same starter for mine and love it.
I got mine from an Ebay seller named DB Electrical. Its a brand new starter and even came with the bolts for $79.95 plus $12.00 shipping! _________________ Bobby
