accually my uncle told me about this, he uses this technique for his tractor projects... according to him it usually works, but some parts are so rusted that doing this will take away from structual integrety

I am using electrolosys to de-rust my 55 Merc wagon.
I have a 4'x4' x 3'deep container with water. Itwill hold a complete inner fender (there's one in there now).
COMPLETELY derusting the other one took a week of soaking and 2 hours lightly rubbing with a scouring pad spread over that week.
IF you reverse the polarity you will loose metal, otherwise it is entirely safe.

It does work and is relativly easy but...

It does not remove paint so you still have to sand, chemically strip, sand or abrasive blast the piece to repaint it anyway.

The process works best on bare steel rusted parts because there is little more prep involved.

I prefer to abrasive blast most items. I use a pressure blaster and use coal slag. I do not use sand as it is almost all silica where coal slag has almost no silica.
You will always hear the old "sandblasting warps panels". That can be true with commercial equipment but with home equipment it would be very hard to warp a panel. Sanding panels puts more heat into it than blasting. While blasting the air actually cools the panel.

Another way of removing rust is by using phosphoric acid. It will remove the rust and leave an iron phosphate coating behind. It will not remove good metal though.
