Recently purchased a 70 SS El Camino. The Paint code on the cowl tag is "- 8". Right below the paint code the tag is stamped LO755. I can't find this information decoded anywhere. Partial dismantling of the car yeilds traces of Hugger Orange but all the info I have read tells me there is no orange in 70. One book tells me this is possibly a special paint code but to date no one has decoded these. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Out of the fifteen possible colors available on the 70 El Camino, Orange isn't one of them. However, there were four colors that ended in 8.

28 Fathom Blue
48 Forest Green
58 Autumn Gold
78 Black Cherry

A few shades of orange were available on the 70 vans and pickups. Hugger orange was available on the 70 Nova.

I had thirty year younger eyes take a look and the cowl tag reads as follows:

l
ST70 13680 B967068BDY
TR 756 - BPNT
2C B LO755

The character above the D appears to be a lower case L.
The car has the round gages and holes in the fenders for the SS emblems, bucket seats, console, TH400, 12 bolt 3.73 rear, a/c, pb, ps, tilt wheel. Am I correct in assuming, if the heater box has never been off the car then the original color will be behind it?

Thanks

ST = Style
70 = year
13680 = El Camino Custom V8
B = built in Baltimore
967068 BDY = Production body number
TR = trim
756 = Black vinyl bucket seats
BPNT = ? Usually the paint code
2C B LO755 - Numbers under the paint code were a notation to the assembly line workers that the vehicle is not a standard issue item.

I think that would be safe to assume.

Everything is fine up to this point.

Here is what this means

-B is the paint and top color
- indicates a non-standard paint color
B - Black vinyl top

2c is the month and week built
02 - Feb
C - 3rd weeks production

B L 0755 are internal plant production info that was used to id the body when it came over to the final assembly line. It has nothing to do with options and its truncated version of a longer number which was generated by the electonic broadcasting system the synchronized the assembly plant.

Thanks everyone. I suppose the build sheet is the only way to document the color. I will have my twelve year old set up a website to show the restoration progress.
