VIN: 1-3680-8Z142253

1 - Chevy
36 - Mailbu, 8 cyl.
80 - El Camino
8 - 1968
Z - Freemont
142253 - 42,253 on 1968 Freemont production sequence (?)

Cowl:

94A 194511 530562 (94A could be 04A)
68-13680 BF06477 Body
Z65 217 890 YY Paint

I haven't found a definitive cowl decoder online, so I'm a bit stumped.

I'd really like to know as the engine is a 307 and the tranny only has 2 gears...not much of a highway driver!

I'm curious how you know this stuff???

Also, is the only indicator of what the tranny type is, is from the built sheet (which, of course, I don't have)?

This info is all over the web and has been printed in many books by GM and others.

Also, I have been interested in these vehicles since the 1960's. My 1st new car was a 1966 Impala SS 396, then a 1970 SS 454 Chevelle, a 1972 El Camino SS 350 to name a few.

The trans is going to be hard to determine. The only place that would show up is on Protect-O-Plate (POP) warranty plate. Those id'd the VIN, build month, engine, trans, axle, carb, brakes, steering and radio options. The metal plate was attached to the warranty booklet and the dealer would run this card thru a credit card type machine that embossed all the info on the service repair order. It was made at the assembly plant and was discontinued after 1972.
