While there are no dues or fees for membership at El Camino
Central, we do rely upon member contributions to keep the site and server running smoothly. As membership grows, so does
site usage. Recently we have seen a huge jump in server load and bandwidth. As a result, at times we notice extremely
slow page loading. Many of you may have also noticed the new member rankings used to recognize supporting members.

I've been thinking about being a contibutor, but I'd like to have a grip on this stuff before I do. If there is a solution that involves a significant amount of money, I want to contribute accordingly.
On the other hand, if it is mostly a question of getting around to fixing the problems that would be good to know as well.
Whatever it is, it should be addressed as it is holding back a great site.
. . . .Whatever it is, it should be addressed as it is holding back a great site.
I agree with you 110%. I too, have not contributed, not because I don't want to, or because I don't have the funds.
I've noticed quite a few people who have been members for 3/4 years, with over 2,500 posts, who still have not contributed, but enjoyed the fruits of the site. And that has made me wonder why?
I understand Robert has had some health issued, runs his own business, and we all know how much time that can take - TONS! I understand his wife has also been sick - I'm sure he has an over full plate, and doing his level best.
Maybe we have someone on here, who is retired, with the computer knowledge to upgrade, or monitor, or ? ? ? ? ? to keep things runing smoothly.
Maybe we can make it mandatory to have a $5.00/10.00/15.00/20.00 or whatever "Registration Fee" to fund these things, and help who ever we get to keep it all running.
I'm up for about anything, to see this continues. . . .thoughts?
Don
Thanks, that certainly gives me some insight I was lacking. I know nearly nothing of the organization here, but would be willing to help where I can.
I don't have the computer skills to help on the tech side, but I will contribute to an upgrade if that is called for. And, I will try to do my part in adding to the knowlege base.
Is the site being attacked? Is it Snaggleto0th's fault? Is all the talk of new Camaro's hurting the software's feelings or making the Camino gods mad?
As always, we dearly appreciate all that each of you do!
Take care.
Maybe it's the guy who bought the 5.0 'stang that's angered the Chevy gods or caused some other bad karma (I think I've been watching to much of "My Name is Earl").
I've suggested this before... why not get a license for vBulletin the most widely used bulletin software on the web? it'll cost about $170 I think but that can be made back by setting it up so that paying members get some extra benefits. The software is easy to set up and has tons of options. it can be made so that if someone wants to join the club for say $20 a year, it will automatically collect the funds into PayPal and automaticlly set the users status to be a member... and automatically let them know every year their dues are due! You can set it so that paying members get special privileges such as avatars, pictures in signatures, more private message space, access to members only forums, nearly anything you want. _________________ Leo

I for one have never had any problems except when the site was hacked a couple of times. I have Roadrunner with no problems with speed from this site and I myself would leave if we went to a manditory fee which I have already done on another site, all it did was cause problems because when you have to pay for something then here comes all the complaints.
Robert is doing a great job and the moderators. Thanks guys for a gerat job.

At this point we are spinning our wheels a little. There is a level of validity to most every point made so far. However, while Robert and the gang are generous in their consideration of our views, they don't necessarily have to listen at all.
I think it would be valuable to hear from Robert, and some Moderators and Directors and get their take on this. If change will be considered, it wouldn't be hard to set up a few pertinent polls to assist in establishing a general direction, create a plan, and make enhancements reality.
It is good to have so many members who truly want the best for the Forum and many who have skills to be part of taking us to the next level. The problem the site faces is a good one. It is called Growth.
As always, I want to be very clear of my appreciation for everybody on the team that makes this site happen!
Take care. _________________ 84 Elky GTA

...and I myself would leave if we went to a manditory fee...
OK, read my post again and this time really read it... nobody is suggesting a "mandatory" fee. The idea behind a membership "option"... again "option"... is that it would help pay for the software and server fees. A "paid" member would get a few extra perks such as the ability to have bigger avatars, the ability to post pistures in a signature, even the ability to post product reviews while non-members can't. Possibly access to a member's only forum and the ability to have some web space on the server. For any users who insist that it should all be for free well then there won't be much of a change, you can still post and read messages no differently than you do now. User's who pay also get the satisfaction of contributing to a good forum and helping it grow.
Think of the future, if Chevy really does introduce a new Elky EEC and NECOA would be primed and ready to draw in those new owners! _________________ Leo
