HI, Newbie to this board and after doing a good search on the subject I believe that a 90 s10 22 gal TBI EFI sending unit will work in the El-camino 22 gallon tank and the damn thing is only 40 something dollars at rock auto. It is cheap enough for me to order one and try it in order for me to transplant a 92 Syclone/Typhoon engine in my 80 elky, hence the screen name "El Caphoon" The elky's tank is 10.75" deep and the S10's 10.5 inches deep. may have to bend it little but gm wants over $300 wholesale for a 87 elky efi sender now. The s10 appears to have 4 lines going to it for venting and eec stuff and all the lines are push on. a 1993 blazers unit for vin w has screw on/"o" ring (Rochester?) fittings, so for high pressure, that may be the way to go. I think the 93's lists for $40 too. Anyone try this yet, if not I'll go ahead and place the order and be the test rat. Nice site, by the way. I was directed by some Sy-Ty.net peeps in my endeavor.

Welcome to ECC!

I don't think anyone has tried or thought about trying an S10 sending unit yet. If it does work you'll make many owners very greatful for giving them a better option.

I also see that the s10 blazer sending unit has a 1/2" or 5/8" pipe for running a hose to the filler neck to aid in filling the tank without back pressure problems... that would keep a person from having to drill into his tank to fix another problem. I would just need to drill a hole in the filler neck at the top. I saw someone used heater hose for this mod, I don't think that is advisable, due to the type of rubber some hose is made up of. NAPA can get or has the fuel resistant emmisions hose for this application. I will order the tank and sending unit shortly and update the board on this.

Well, I see you did come over here! Welcome, and good luck with the project. I think 12SecCamino on this site has a typhoon, he may be able to help.

ordered the tank from here: http://discountradiators.com/ and the sending unit from rock auto... Tank $149 shipped, unit $49 shipped. I already had a 255L walboro for the Tyclone project. I bought the 87-90 s10 blazer sending unit. I can adapt braided hose to it better. I'll fit it up and post the results in about a week or after it arrives.

Embarassed It was I that used heater hose for the vent. I would not recommend it either, I needed the car together right away though. I had the heater hose on there for about 6 months, and although I never had a problem with it it did shrink and distort because of the exposure to gas. I ended up getting a piece of half inch steel tubing from McMaster Carr and replacing the hose. I had wanted to put the vent in with steel tube from the start, I just could not find a source right away.

No Problem, I wouldn't want anyone to burn down their ride. Don't ask me how I know about heater hose, just that it isn't a good hook up for 1/2 aluminum fuel line to hose barbed fitting. (It blew out in about 3 weeks) damn near caught my race car on fire...

Hi el Caphoon,
Any luck with the S-10 sending unit? Please update us as I'm looking for information to install a TPI engine and need to get the info on what sender & fuel pump will fit in the '87 22 gallon baffled efi tank.
Thanks,
Dave

I have the sending unit, but I still haven't recieved the tank. Guess I'm going to "earn" my savings on the tank. It looks like the pickup will have to be bent about 20 degrees, but without the tank, I don't know for sure. I looked at some good picks of the non-efi unit, and they have a 20 degree bend in them. But there may be more than that to it. I'll keep you updated. This forum is slow to load lately....

Dude you have gotta post some pics of this thing.

might or might not be a new idea...but it was your "el caphoon" that caught my attentions immediately i knew what was going on.

Your post both here and in the sy-ty forums got me thinking...transplant the transfer case and front axle and whatever else would be required into an el cam...for an all wheel drive, 4.3 L turbo (or a SBC) AWD meano...something to get the traction to the ground. Damn these ADD moments...to many synapses firing off at close intervals. Man i need a project El Cam!

Hell you could even try to adapt the body molding to stuff the larger meats! Too bad i don't have photo shop, or that I'm any good at it...

Couldn't see one cut up unless it was trashed beyond recovery...but the parts should be do-able. Please keep the progress updated on this one...really strikes a cord seeing other have some demented moments...more ambitious than just the vanilla 350 transplant. Don't get me wrong...it's the most popular engine choice for a very good reason...but it's good to see some adaption going on...like i said in another post...do it like GM should have...grab parts from all over the line to make something wicked. Combine truck and Camaro and caprice and whatever else you can get your hands on...just make it your own!

Alright...think the meds are kicking in...and I've purged a few frenetic ideas to the world.

Thanks for the inspiration...

The fuel tank was to be delivered this week.... here it is Saturday and no tank... I'm starting to think the $40 savings may not be worth the wait... The S10 sending unit will have to have a bend put in it, above the fuel pump tube and maybe re -indexed as far as the two locating tangs go... I like the 1/2" vent for the filler neck and the extra fittings on the sending unit for other things... I'll keep you updated. If I was going to go all wheel drive, like the syclones or typhoons, I might use an extended cab 1rst. gen s10 4 X 4 chasssi, and mount the el-camino body of my choice on it, so as to keep the wheelbase the same... all's it takes is time and money... and I'm usually short in both departments... Laugh

Yes, the tank finally arrived, and as I thought from looking at pictures of the sending unit, modifications such as bending the tube to fit the angle and probably cutting off the two tangs, to orient the float just right. Who was the engineer that put that angled mounting hump on top of the tank anyway??? The locking ring and seal is the same also... I'll see if I can get some pics made up as I either make this unit work, or mutilate it... Laugh
