I am repairing the A/C on my 72 el Camino. The new setup works well, but does not kick into high cool in the HI switch position. The relay has been replaced. I am told I need to replace the Max Air Vacuum Motor, which has the effect of recirculating cooler air within the cab.
Has anyone experienced this problem before? Where can I obtain a replacement motor?
Thanks - I am new to this impressive site. _________________ Paul Connealy

What happens when you put it on high? Does the fan go off? If so it is still a electrical problem. If the fan runs on high but the desired airflow is the problem, then the vacuum pod could be at fault. _________________ Jim

Thanks for the response. As I understand the problem, on MAX, the inside air (recirculated air) is directed around the heater core and through the A/C outlets. Whatever mechanism closes out the outside air to allow the inside air to recirculate is not functioning properly. The A/C and fan work on MAX, but recirculation is not occuring. Again, I have been informed that a motor called the MAX air vacuum motor is the culprit. Is anyone familiar with this problem and is there a GM part number for it?
Also, if there is another cause, I will appreciate any and all advice.

I worked on mine not too long ago, Paul. This is what appears to happen on mine. When you move the selector to max, the pod that you can see in the cowl near the right wiper closes off the cowl area. There is also one behind the right kick panel that opens to draw air from that area. There is also a blend door in the air box that is vacuum operated. This door changes position with different selections and it has seperate position when max is selected. Hope that helps. _________________ Jim

A vacuum motor is not a motor in the real sense. It works more like a solenoid but is vacuum operated. You might even be able to buy one at a GM dealer. Take your old one in and see if they have one that will replace it. The other option might be a junk yard. The one you need is probably under the dash of several GM models.....Doug _________________ 85 El Camino 305, TH350, K&N, dual exhausts
