I was searching eBay and saw someone selling a vacuum controlled heater tap/valve for an El Camino which would be fitted in one of the heater supply hoses. Mine does not have any sort of tap and I was wondering if the '75 ever had this feature, either vacuum or mechanically controlled?

As I am rebuilding the heater box and replacing the heater core I am familiar with the air flows and can imagine that the cool, air-conditioned, air would pick up heat from the heater core unless the water circulation was turned off.

Yes in fact I still use it. It screws into the front of the intake manifold in place of a regular heater hose fitting. It shuts off the coolant flow until the heater is turned on. Works off of vacuum.

I'll post a pic, I know I have a few of that part of the engine.

Happy

Thanks James. Damn I should have bid harder for that NOS part.

I look forward to seeing the pics if you have them.

Little harder to see but look towards the top center near the AC compressor and belt tensioner.

Nice engine bay Smile

From what I can see it seems to be just like the one I let go on eBay for $21.50. I just was unsure if I needed and could use it.

Now I must go research if I can get one of those and to see what might have happened to the vacuum supply.

Cool John! That part is a pretty common one used on a lot of different GM's. Not a real expensive part. About 12 bucks at our Autozone parts store! Of course I don't know about parts availability for American cars down in your part of the world! GM used these on a lot of years. Maybe one of your Australian counterparts to GM used them too! Cool

Johnny, the plot thickens. The NOS part sold on eBay for US$21.50. Just shows people need to do homework or else you can easily pay more for a part which is available from a store at a cheaper price.

I can picture a mechanically operated (by cable) tap on some of my old cars but cannot remember the vacuum version. I will need to check out the vacuum side of things before I rush in and buy one.

Yeah, thanks, engine bay and rear end have put a lot of damage on the old credit card the past few months...

If you get one you're going to find that the vacuum hose that hooks up to it is really small and thin. In fact if you have the original harness left for it it will actually look like a wire. I seem to remember it was black with yellow fat stripes. I had to find something close and get some vacuum fittings to make mine work again after an engine fire about 15 years ago.

It's kind of nice to have it as it keeps the heater core from keeping too much coolant in it when not in use. That can eventually cause failure of the heater core.

Cool

Thanks once again. I checked when I got home from work and found the hose. It was cable tied to to other components and still looks to be the original length.

BTW, mine is black with a wide brown stripe.

Now all I need is the tap/valve which I should be able to pick up locally. That is not the highest priority at the moment.
