Hi, I am writing this on behalf of my friend who has a 1982 El Camino. He has been trying to get it running right asa it has been running rich and kind of strange for a while. Anyways, he tried putting a new computer in it as he thought the old one was bad and in the process he put the Eprom chip in backwards and he thinks he fried it as it is running a lot worse now (I am guessing it is limp mode now). Is there anywhere to get a new or used Eprom chip or have his old one reprogrammed if that is possible? Thanks a lot for any and all help. We have been working on this car for a while now and want to get it running good again. Thanks, Mark

What motor? What are the numbers on the ECM? There were two ECM for V8, only one for V6, and seven different PROM for 82. I doubt you can find anyone to burn a new PROM. You'll need to find a used one.

Thanks Ernie, do you have any idea where we could find a used one? The engine is a V-6 229. I think it actually is not the original engine with the car. I think my friend said it came off an 82 or 83 Olds. The other screwed up thing is we cannot find any numbers or tags or anything on the engine block to tell us what year and make the engine is. Is there anywhere in particular we should look. Again, thanks for any and all help.

Hey guys, I found out from my friend that it is an V-6 229 engine out of an Chevy Malibu, either 82 or 83. What he said was it is the same V-6 229 they put in the El Camino that year so the guy who used to own it switched the original out for that one. Any help finding an Eprom chip(used or new) for this car would be awesome. Thanks, Mark

PS If you're asking Barney is my dog

Sorry to say, but it's going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. You can keep your eye on ebay. I know there are a few sellers that sell reconditioned ECM's but I don't know if they have EPROMs. Try contacting them.
