Code will be stamped on front side of axle tube, passenger side. Post code and we can tell you what you have. Secondly you can count number of teeth on your ring divided by number of teeth on your pinion to give you your ratio. _________________ York SC /1979 GMC Caballero / 350 Roller / Alum Heads / 410 posi
If you don't have an options sticker inside the glove box you can crawl underneath the rear axle and get the code from the axle tube. Read this thread.

Here's another option for you to figure out what gear ratio you have. I had posted this on another site that is primarily truck based, so the gear ratio number examples are a little higher (numerically). This also helps because the code on the axle may not necessarily match the rear end gears if a gear swap was done some time in the past.
If you don't want to pull the cover and end up having to put in new gear oil, do the following:
- Jack up the rear end so the tires are not touching the ground and place some jackstands under the rear axle housing, make sure the front wheels are blocked / chocked before you jack it up.
- Release the parking brake and place the transmission in neutral.
- Mark the driveshaft with some of your wife's favorite nail polish, or some tape will work also.
- Now rotate the rear tire by hand one full 360 degree turn. While doing that count the number of times the mark on the driveshaft turns around.
If you count 3 and 3/4 turns, you probably have 3.73 gears. If you count just over 4 turns, you probably have 4.10 gears. I'm sure you get the idea by now.

Yes Hans, but you said it as I was typing my reply so I didn't hear it. _________________ Ernie

On my '81 I found the factory build sheet inside the upper door panel. I was told there may be another one above the headliner and/or gas tank. Not sure if an '85 will be the same, but it's a place to start. _________________
